January 24, 2022

As a reminder, if you plan on taking a grab and go lunch on Friday, please take a minute and fill out the one question google form that Dr. Chapman emailed to all students. You only need to fill it out if you plan on taking a cold sack lunch on your way out the door at 11:30 that day. The form will close at 4:00 today. 

The time has come - Auditions for Iron's Got Talent will be held this Thursday, January 27th, after school in the Senior Cafeteria! We're welcoming any (school-appropriate) talents you want to put on display for your classmates, to perform and compete in a fun variety show that raises money for Prom 2022! Student council is hosting the Winter Semi-Formal, formerly known as the Sadie Hawkins dance, on Saturday, February 5th from 8:00-10:30 pm. Tickets are $5 and will be sold during lunch hours next Tuesday through Thursday, Feb. 1st through Feb. 3rd. No outside dates will be allowed. 

Please join us at our next Feminism Club meeting on Monday, February 7th, in the IMC after school from 3:40-4:30. All are welcome! If you have questions, please contact Ms. Hedgespeth.

This week's senior of the week is Carter Elston. Carter's favorite school lunch is the deli sandwich; favorite teacher is Mr. Thomas; favorite movie is Remember the Titans. Carter plans to attend college and major in a sports field. Something you may not have known about Carter is that he enjoys going to the gym.

January 10, 2022

Illinois Math League Competition is tomorrow, Tuesday Jan 11th, after school from 3:45 to 4:15 in the Cafeteria. All students in all levels of math are welcome. Hope to see you there.

Attention all boys interested in trying out for Baseball this spring. We will have informational meetings at 8:00 AM tomorrow, January 11, and at 3:35 PM on Wednesday, January 12. Both meetings will be held in the Senior Cafeteria. If you are not able to attend either meeting, please email Coach Short.

Attention students taking dual credit and AP classes, do you have any textbooks sitting around that you have no use for? Or maybe you want to save money for a textbook for a class you know you need to take in the future? The Future Business Leaders of America will be hosting a textbook exchange for all students during lunch hours starting this Thursday, the 14th and extending into next week, till the 22nd, with a table outside the library. Bring a textbook for any Dual Credit class at NCHS or ACT, SAT and AP study books, and exchange it for a different one! 

The IMC Book Club will meet before school this Friday at 7:30 in the IMC. Everyone is welcome at Book Club! Please see Ms. Fox Anvick in the IMC with any questions.

ATTENTION GIRLS SOCCER PLAYERS: If you are interested in trying out for NCHS Girls Soccer this spring, please attend a short meeting at 3:35 pm this Thursday, January 6, in Room 11. If you are interested but unable to attend, please contact Coach Chapman.

Attention Ironmen Fans: Support your NCHS boys’ swimming & diving teams when they compete in the Iron Invite this Saturday at the NCHS pool.  Diving events begin at 8:30 am and swimming events will begin no earlier than 12:00 pm.  The admission price is $3.00 for students and senior citizens and $5.00 for adults and is good for the entire day - no Student Activity Passes or Unit 5 Family passes will be accepted since this is a special event.  Good luck Iron Swimmers & Dive!

The After-School Forge is open this week to help you get ready for finals. On Tuesday through Thursday from 3:45-5:00, bring your ID and study materials, and enter through the senior hallway for a productive environment to study and get work done, complete with peer tutors and teachers ready to help. This is the last week the After-School Forge will be open this semester, so take advantage of this great resource! 

For today’s Pajama spirit day, Student Council will be selling hot chocolate for a $1 during lunch in the atrium. Spirit week continues tomorrow with grade color wars. Freshmen, wear white…sophomores wear green…juniors wear red and seniors wear blue. On Wednesday, show off your ugly sweaters. Thursday is mathletes versus athletes day and Friday will be anything but a backpack day.  

The December drama club meeting is after school in the auditorium tomorrow, December 7th. We will talk about the holiday party. Everyone is welcome. 

Attention students! The annual Foreign language gingerbread house competition is this Thursday, December 9th, after school until 4:30 in rooms 200, 202 and 204. Please check the flyers in the foreign language classrooms or ask your club sponsor for more information! Hope to see you there! 

The IMC Book Club will meet this Friday, Dec. 10, at 7:15 a.m. in the IMC. Everyone is welcome at Book Club! Please see Ms. Fox Anvick with any questions! 

This week's senior of the week is Maitri Koirala. Maitri's favorite school lunch is a deli sandwich, favorite teacher Mr. Suess; favorite movie is "Love, Roise." Maitri plans to attend SIUC to major in dental hygiene. Something you may not have known about Maitri is that she immigrated from Nepal to the US ten years ago.

Finally, a positive pause to help boost your week. As Dory says, "Just keep swimming." As the end of the semester approaches, keep pushing yourself, but also remember to take time for yourself. Good luck with finals next week, Ironmen!

Good morning, Ironmen! Today is Monday, November 22nd. 

Attention Seniors! There will be a senior class meeting today in the auditorium at the beginning of your lunch hour. You will get important information regarding graduation and cap and gown orders. Also, Jostens will be in the atrium during lunch next Thursday, December 2nd and Friday, December 3rd to take your orders. You can also order online before December 3rd. 

Hey Ironmen! Project 7 bible club is today in room 208 from 3:35 to 4:15! Bring A friend and enjoy time with fellow students while strengthening your faith. And on behalf of your Normal Community P7, we hope you have an amazing Thanksgiving break! Snacks will be provided.  

The After-School Forge will be closed tomorrow for Thanksgiving break. It will be open again on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of the last two full weeks of school, and then will be closed during Finals Week. Come to the After-School Forge starting again on November 30 for a great place to make up quizzes or tests, and to study at the end of the year!

As Aaliyah (uh-lee-uh) once said, “If at first, you don’t succeed, then dust yourself off and try again.” Life is about trial and error, you can't learn to run before you first learn to crawl. NCHS is partnering with the Red Cross to host a blood drive this Friday, November 19th! Anyone over 16 can donate in the multi-purpose room from 8am to 2pm. 16-year-olds must bring a signed parent consent form. Anyone who donates blood at this drive will receive a Red-Cross long sleeve tee and a $10 Amazon gift card via email! Sign up during lunch today and tomorrow.

The first meeting for NCHS' Feminism Club will take place after school today from 3:40-4:30 in room 32. Anyone is welcome, and we are hoping to create a community of students and staff engaging in important discussions and working toward equity for all! Please contact Ms. Hedgespeth with any questions about the club. 

Students!  It's down to the last 2 weeks of college reps coming to present to interested students. Tomorrow, please welcome Methodist College, Columbia College, and University of Missouri Saint Louis. On Thursday, please welcome Savannah College of Art & Design and Iowa State University, Washington State and East Carolina Universities. Sign up in the College & Career Center.

The National Honor Society induction ceremony for Senior inductees is tomorrow, November 15, at 7:30 pm in the auditorium.  Please see your email and contact Mr. Knott if you have any questions. The next required National Honor Society members meeting is this Thursday morning at 8:00 am in the Senior Cafe.

The next Spanish Club meeting will take place this Wednesday, November 17th from 3:30-5:45 in the Senior Cafeteria! We will be watching a popular Spanish movie and maybe a few treats! Please plan accordingly for a ride home since this is later than usual. Please email Ms. Nutter with any questions!

The French Club is meeting this Wednesday, November 17th. We are hosting our 15th Annual Bocce Ball Tournament. We'll meet in Room 202 at 3:30 and then head outside to play Bocce Ball until 4:40.

The Inclusive Education Coalition is holding a fundraiser concert this Saturday, November 20th, at the Coffee Hound in downtown Bloomington from 7-10 pm. Groups performing will be local band and rappers Disorganizer, V8 Vast Change, and Darius (Dur-eye-us). 20% of all purchases will be donated to IEC. Come enjoy drinks, snacks, and music for the benefit of a just education.

Key club will be hosting a dodgeball tournament this Saturday, November 20th, in the east gym. Students and staff can either form a team or become part of a team. Check your email for the sign-up form.

Week 10, Juniors & Seniors, for College Rep Visits!  Please welcome Aurora University on Tuesday and University of Iowa, University of Northern Iowa, and Alabama on Thursday!  

A sociology student is hosting a book drive as his project. It starts today and will go through November 19th. There will be a collection bin outside the IMC and in room 14. All books will be donated to local elementary schools and libraries.

Best Buddies is hosting a Dine to Donate this Wednesday, November 10th, at the Chipotle restaurant on College Avenue. It will run from 4 to 8pm. Dine in or order online and help our Best Buddies. 

Any student attending Heartland next fall--either graduating seniors OR College Now students--please join us this Friday, November 12th, for our HEARTLAND APPLICATION DAY in the IMC during lunch hours. Bring your laptop & social security number and we will get it completed! Drawings and prizes for those who come in! 

If you’re a student who loves hands-on classes and thinking "What is a trade school? and what am I good at?"... sign up to take the ASVAB test here at NCHS on November 22. Please see Mrs. Hawkins in the CCC for more info and to sign up.

The Midwest Food Bank drive is still going on and will continue until November 19th. There will be bins located outside the main office, cafeteria and fishbowl, as well as rooms 8, 14, 26, 206, 213, and 240. Please donate!

Bloomington Area Career Center applications are now open on the BACC website under “About BACC - Enrollment Information.” Be sure to complete the Unit 5 application. There is a BACC Open House next Tuesday, November 9th, at BACC from 5:30-7:00pm. If you have any questions, please see your school counselor. 

Hey Ironmen! Project 7 starts today! Join us in room 208 from 3:30 to 4:15 for our introductory meeting. Snacks and games will be provided. We hope to see you there!  

Juniors and Seniors:  Please welcome University of Illinois Springfield and Knox College Tuesday this week, followed by Vassar College and Texas A & M on Thursday. Sign up in the CCC!

How and where can you study to be a nurse?  Tuesday,  we welcome University of Illinois Chicago to talk to us about their NURSING Program at the University of Illinois Springfield and how to become a direct admit. Anyone interested in a nursing career should stop by your lunch hour. And on Wednesday: Please join us and the Hopedale Medical Complex to learn about medical careers close to Bloomington-Normal.  

Attention! Spanish Club's Dia de los Muertos celebration will be tomorrow, November 2nd, in the main cafeteria from 3:30-4:15. Please meet at the back by the Senior Cafe. We will do traditional crafts and have a contest with prizes. All are welcome!  

Girls and Boys Wrestling starts next Monday, November 8th. Anyone interested in wrestling can pick up a packet tomorrow, November 2nd, during lunch hours in room 99. If you can't make it to the pickup, find Coach Kaufman in Room 85 for information. 

Anyone interested in trying out for NCHS Girls' Soccer for the Spring of 2022 should attend a short meeting this Wednesday, November 3rd, in Room 11 from 3:35-3:50 pm. If you have questions or are unable to attend, please contact Coach Chapman. 

Tryouts for the Winter Dance Competition Team will be held this Wednesday, November 3rd, in the dance room right after school. Bring dance shoes and tennis shoes to wear for jazz, technique and hip hop skills. 

This week's senior of the week is Ethan Scott. Ethan's favorite school lunch is a taco; favorite teacher is Mr. Keogh; favorite movie is The Sandlot. Ethan plans to study sports journalism in college. Something you may not have known about Ethan is that he is a Packers fan. 

 

To wrap things up, here’s a positive pause to help boost your week. As John Green once said, "There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t." Struggles are only temporary. Anyone interested in trying out for the girls basketball team should see Coach Feeney in Room 35. Again, see Coach Feeney in Room 35 if interested in being part of the girls basketball team. 

Starting today, there will be an ongoing food drive here at NCHS. There will be bins located outside the main office, cafeteria and fishbowl, as well as rooms 8, 14, 26, 206, 213, and 240. Every Friday during all lunch hours, there will be a table located outside of the cafeteria where students will be collecting money donations. The food drive, which benefits the Midwest food bank, will go on until November 19th. Please donate! 

Juniors and Seniors:  Please welcome McKendree University, Mizzou, and Eastern Illinois University on Tuesday this week, followed by University of South Alabama, Loyola, Saint Mary's College and University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy in St. Louis on Thursday! Sign up in the CCC! 

Student Council is hosting Octoberfest this week. Starting tomorrow, there will be different games in the atrium during lunch hours. Come and win some candy prizes! 

Come join the NCHS orchestras and animals from the Miller Park Zoo, this Thursday night for our 27th annual Hauntcert entitled "Escape!"  The show features singers, dancers, and well known music from movies such as the Lion King, Pink Panther, and Sing.  Admission is free and shows begin at 6:00 and 7:30 pm.  

Attention Ironmen Volleyball Fans: Support your varsity girls volleyball team as they play for the IHSA Class 4A Regional Championship this Thursday night at 6:00 pm in the East Gym. Admission is $5.00 per person - no student activity passes or Unit 5 family passes will be accepted since this is an IHSA playoff game. Let’s Go Iron!  

Ironmen Football Fans:  Come cheer on your NCHS football team in first round IHSA playoff action this Friday evening at 6:30 versus Blue Island Eisenhower at Dick Tharp Field.  Admission is $5.00 per person and all fans will need a ticket – no Student Activity passes or Unit 5 Family passes will be accepted since this is an IHSA playoff game.  Early ticket sales will take place from 8:00-3:30 Thursday and Friday in the Athletic Director’s Office.  Support your Ironmen as they try to advance to Round 2 of the IHSA football playoffs.  Good luck Iron! 

Looking for something fun to do this Halloween weekend? Key club is hosting games and a drive-in movie this Saturday, October 30th, behind the school. Games will be held from 3 to 5:30. The movie “Coraline” will be shown from 6 to 8. Concessions will be available and all proceeds will benefit St. Jude.

Juniors and Seniors: It's Week 7 of College Rep Visits. Please welcome Valparaiso, Indiana State, Cedarville University, Grace College, Saint Louis University, Indiana Wesleyan, and Heartland Community College to our school Tuesday and Thursday. Please sign up in the CCC if you're interested in learning more from these fine institutions. 

It's time for our first LUNCH & LEARN of the school year!  Any student wanting to learn more about Heartland Community College, grab your lunch and head to the IMC tomorrow, Oct. 19th. Seniors, grab your social security number too and come and apply with the quick help from Morgan & Kelsey.  It's time! 

Attention trivia fans, Scholastic Bowl is starting back up. If you enjoy trivia and want to train for being on a future game show, come join us for our upcoming season. Junior and senior practice starts tomorrow, Oct. 19th, after school in room 212 with Mr. Froelich. Freshmen and sophomores, you will start next Tuesday, Oct. 26th, with Mr. Bergmann in room 201. See Mr. Froelich or Mr. Bergmann with any questions.

This Wednesday, October 20th, French club will be hosting a Spooky Scavenger hunt with food, drinks and games. The fun starts at 3:30 in room 202. Just a reminder, please turn in dues for membership and a t-shirt if you bought one.

rIronmen Soccer Fans:  Support your varsity boys’ soccer team when they play for the IHSA Class 3A Regional Championship Saturday morning at 11:00 am versus Minooka at the NCHS Soccer Field.  Admission is $5.00 per person - no Student Activity passes or Unit 5 Family passes will be accepted since this is an IHSA playoff game.  Cheer on the Ironmen as they attempt to win the Regional and advance to the Sectional next week!  

Ironmen football fans:  Due to the large crowd anticipated for this Friday’s football game at Normal West, early ticket sales will be held in the Athletic Director’s office from 8:00 until 3:30, both Wednesday and Thursday. Student council is hosting a Halloween "drive-in" movie this Thursday evening from 7PM-9PM. The movie, “Coraline,” will be shown behind the school and there’s no cost to attend. There will be concessions with hot chocolate, Halloween candy, and popcorn!

Attention Ironmen Fans: Support your NCHS girls’ swimming & diving teams when they compete in the Big 12 Swim Meet this Saturday at the NCHS pool. Diving events begin at 8:30 am and swimming events begin at 1:00 pm.  The admission price is $3.00 for students and $5.00 for adults and is good for the entire day - no Student Activity Passes or Unit 5 Family passes will be accepted since this is a special event.  Good luck Lady Iron Swimmers & Divers!

Starting next Monday, October 25th, there will be an ongoing food drive here at NCHS. There will be bins located outside the main office, cafeteria and fishbowl, as well as room 8, 14, 26, 206, 213, and 240. Every Friday during all lunch hours, there will be a table located outside of the cafeteria where students will be collecting money donations. The food drive, which benefits the Midwest food bank, will go on until November 19th. Please donate!

The After-School Forge is now open! The After-School Forge is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3:45-5:00, and runs a bus at 5:15 to 16 stops around town if you need transportation home. There is no need to sign up and you can come as often as you like from now until the end of the semester. Just bring your ID and your study materials. Line up outside room 04 at 3:45 starting today!

The first Mock Trial meeting will be this Friday, October 15th, after school in room 6. We will meet from 3:40 until about 5. The plan is to go over the basics about what Mock Trial is all about and find out a time (or times) to start meeting regularly to workshop and practice Mock Trial concepts before the case comes out in early November. Attention students, if you did not have your picture taken at registration, tomorrow Oct. 5th and Wednesday Oct. 6th will be the final days to have your photo taken for the yearbook. A photographer will be in room 52 from 8am to 4pm on both days. No appointment is necessary. Orders can be made online or pick up an order form in the main office.

Attention all mathletes! This year's math team will be running practices right after school on Mondays until 4:30 starting TODAY in Room 244! If you're interested in learning more or have questions about math team, find Mr. Florido or Ms. Shoukry.

Are you interested in gaining hands-on experience in government and learn about the inner workings of legislation? Would you enjoy meeting other students from around the state to discuss current events and generate ideas to help improve Illinois?  Please come to the informational meeting for Youth & Government tomorrow, October 5th at 6:45pm in the cafeteria. Zander plans to move to Georgia and attend a community college before transferring to Georgia or Georgia Tech. Something you may not have known about Zander is that he was a vegetarian for a year.

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes will be hosting their first meeting of the year on Thursday morning, September 16th at 7:45 a.m.  The FCA will be meeting in the senior cafeteria.  At our first meeting we'll have food and a wonderful guest speaker.  Anyone is welcome to attend! 

Homecoming dance tickets go on sale during lunch hours this week. Tickets will be sold in order of class so today, seniors can buy tickets for either the 7-8:30 session or the 9-10:30 session.  Cost is $10… cash or checks only. If you are bringing a date, make sure the date request form is filled out by 3:30 pm on Sept. 17th.  (Form was emailed to all students). 

Perhaps one of the most exciting homecoming events, NCHS' Color War is back! Join us for a color-filled game of Capture the Flag and more next week, (Monday, September 20th, from 5-7 PM). Tickets will be on sale every day this week for $6 during lunch in the atrium. You can sign up individually or as a group!

Juniors & Seniors:  This week starts our fall "College Admissions Rep Visit" season, which means many colleges & universities will be visiting our school to talk to interested students during the school day on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  If you're interested in attending a presentation, please sign up with Mrs. Hawkins in the College & Career Center, also known as the "CCC"!  This week, we welcome "Paul Mitchell The School" and "Western Illinois University."

All current National Honor Society members should have received an email from Mr. Knott regarding new officer elections. The Google Form required to have your name placed on the ballot must be completed by tomorrow, September 8th.

Looking for a way to volunteer in the community? Learn how by attending today’s meeting of the Key club, an international, student-led organization that gives members ways to provide service, build character and develop leadership. The Key club meeting is today at 3:30 in the senior cafeteria.

This year Unit 5 Esports will once again have League of Legends, Rocket League, Overwatch, and Smash Bros Esports teams competing in various leagues. Don't play? No worries! Beginners and experts are welcome! You can also support the teams by utilizing your skills. We'll need casters, game analysts, social media content creators, and video editors. Ironmen Soccer Fans:  Cheer on the varsity boys’ soccer team when they play two of their top rivals in the Intercity Tournament at home this week – Thursday at 4:30 pm versus Bloomington and Saturday at 10:00 am versus Normal West.  Adult admission is $4.00 and student admission is $3.00 for each game – no student activity passes or Unit 5 family passes will be accepted since this is an Intercity tournament.  Good luck Iron Soccer!

One of the best pieces of advice for ANY student at NCHS is to get involved. Whether that's through sports, clubs, or other extracurriculars, it's the best way to meet new people, learn more about yourself, and have lots of fun! Speaking of, here is a great opportunity for ALL students: introducing, FBLA: Future Business Leaders of America, which is hosting its first returning member meeting tomorrow, on Tuesday, August 24th, and its first New Member meeting on Tuesday, August 31st. FBLA is a diverse club with a plethora of opportunities including service projects, competitive events, and a networking chain that includes 250,000 members worldwide! If you're interested, be sure to attend! Again, for returning members, tomorrow, August 24th, and for new members, next Tuesday, August 31st.
