NCHS Announcements

May 16, 2022

Attention all students… if you are not taking a final exam next week, please return your books and school laptop to the IMC before you leave for the summer to avoid any fees. 

Girls soccer plays at 10:00 am in Pekin on Saturday morning for a regional championship.  If they win, we will be hosting the Sectional next week!  

If you are signed up for AP Literature and Composition for next year, you should be receiving a letter from Mr. Feeney about the course and the expectations.  If you have questions or have not received it, see Mr. Feeney in Room 35.  

Please join us at our next Feminism Club meeting tomorrow, May 17th, in room 95 after school from 3:45-4:45. At this meeting, we will be joined by two local Krav Maga instructors for a seminar on self-defense. All are welcome, and no equipment is needed-- just bring yourself, athletic apparel, and a water bottle! However, before attending, students will need to get a parent or guardian's signature on a waiver to participate. Faculty interested in participating will also need to get a waiver. Tomorrow is the French Club's final meeting from 3:40-4:40 in room 202! We are hosting an art trivia night with food as well as selecting next year's French Club Officers, so make sure that you're there!

Buenos dias a todos! Hispanic Heritage Club is excited to announce its next meeting this coming Wednesday, May 18th. This will be the final meeting of the semester before we kick start things in the fall so please feel free to come join us for some music, some games, and a surprise art activity! We will be meeting in Room 238 from 3:45pm - 4:45pm. Any questions? Reach out to Aurora Flores or Mr. King.

It is the final Pickleball Club of the year on Thursday, May 19 from 8-9:30pm in the small gym.  

It's time for the annual IMC Used Book Sale! Come to the IMC and buy some gently used books to take home! Books are $1 for hard covers and 50 cents for paperback. The sale will take place this week - Monday, May 16 through Friday, May 20, in the IMC. All proceeds from the used book sale go to the purchase of new library books!

Do you want to take some great books home to read over the summer? You're in luck! The IMC will have Summer Book Checkout this week - students may check out up to 10 books to take home over the summer. Books will be due back when school starts in August. Take advantage and grab some good reads!

This week's senior of the week and the final senior of the week for the class of 2022 is Laurelin Rowley. Laurelin's favorite school lunch is what she brings in a really old lunchbox; Favorite teachers are Frau Schnabel and Mrs. Kelly; favorite movie is the Bourne Supremacy. Laurelin plans to attend Brigham Young University starting in the fall. Something you may not have known about Laurelin is that she helped to film an award-winning short film.

Come to the after-school Forge to work on final projects or study for final exams. The Forge is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday after school from 3:45-5:00 and has a bus available for students at 5:15. Come to room 4 behind the IMC in the senior hallway after school, and bring your ID and something to work on. The Forge is open this week and next week, and the last day will be Thursday, May 19. 

Any junior or senior wanting to learn more about RIVIAN and how to become employed or an intern, come to the IMC/CCC this Wednesday---the 11th at 11:00 and be part of their presentation.  Again, the 11th at 11! Please don't miss this opportunity to learn more about electric cars and the impact they will have on your future.

Chris will be attending Heartland College in the fall. Something you may not have known about Chris is that his favorite Angry Bird is Chuck!

Attention seniors attending Heartland after graduation! Come to the IMC tomorrow during your lunch hour to finalize your planning. Heartland Admissions will be here to help and answer all questions—transcripts will be provided.

The final drama club meeting of the year is tomorrow, May 3rd, after school in the auditorium. We will vote on next year’s officers.

Senior Night for the Lady Iron soccer team is tomorrow, May 3rd. JV plays at 4:30 and Varsity plays at 6:15. The senior recognition ceremony will be between games. $1.00 hot dogs will be served at the game which were donated by College Hills Meat Shop. Come out to the soccer field and support our four seniors and Lady Iron. 

Wednesday, May 4th is National Bike to School Day, so the Bike Club is inviting you and your friends to get a helmet and ride a bike to school!

Birding club will meet on Wednesday in Room 10 after school.

The NCHS Key club is hosting a fundraiser this Thursday, May 5th, at Portillos from 4 to 8pm. 20-percent of all proceeds will benefit the Key Club. You can dine in or order online. Look for flyers around the school for more details.

Join us for Shakespeare Shorts, the final product of the Advanced Acting and Directing class, this Saturday, May 7th, at 3:30. Short scenes directed by students including Macbeth, The Tempest, and 12th Night are free and open to the public. The auditorium opens at 3 and the curtain is at 3:30. 

This week's senior of the week is Noah Plassman. Noah's favorite school lunch is chicken strips, favorite teacher is Mrs. Runyon, favorite TV show is The Office. Noah will study at Heartland in the fall. Something you may not have known about Noah is that he loves to work and make money.

Student Council is celebrating DUDE BE NICE WEEK this week!  As a council, we would like to thank the entire Ironmen family (staff and students) for a great school year.  Students, be on the lookout for a special treat Wednesday in the lunchroom...and staff....we will have a few surprises for you too! Also, you can help spread kindness this week and send your friends a treat!  Student council will be selling Cosmic brownies for $1 during the lunch hours--Tuesday through Thursday.  Brownies will be delivered to students on Friday.

All Mu Alpha Theta members will have a picture taken for the yearbook this Wednesday, April 27th, before school at 8:15 in room 48 which is the choir room. You are a member if you paid your fees this year or last year. If you have zero hour, please come to room 48 as soon as you can after class. Seniors, you can get your Mu Alpha Theta cords then! If you cannot make it for the yearbook picture, see Mrs. Feeney to pick up your cords.

The French Club is hosting a French Trivia Night this Wednesday, April 27th where we'll learn about different French Artists and their many fascinating pieces with food and drinks. We'd love to see you there!

Attention students! Please join us for the last Spanish Club meeting of the year this Thursday, April 28th, from 3:30-4:15 in the main atrium! We will be talking about next year's executive board and also learning some traditional Venezuelen dances from an instructor! We may also have a little friendly competition as well! Are you interested in playing in a 3 on 3 basketball tournament? If so, sign up for the 3 on 3 basketball tournament on Wednesday April 27th in the big gym! The fee for each player on a team will be $5 ($15 for a team), and will be paid on the day of the event at the door. All proceeds will benefit the Boys and Girls Basketball programs here at NCHS! Only 3 players per team, and any NCHS student AND OR staff member can sign up! Look for the flyers posted around the school or also in Room 14 for the QR code to sign up!

Iron Drivers: Are you interested in getting a motorcycle license? Did you know that you can qualify in one weekend? Did you notice the new motorcycle-only parking spots? Stop by Room 13 for more info. Be careful and start seeing motorcycles. 

This week’s senior of the week is Sean Brothers. Sean's favorite school lunch is Mac'n Cheese; favorite teacher is Mr. Robinson; favorite movie is Paul Blart Mall Cop. Sean plans to attend Depaul University to major in Film and Television. Something you may not have known about Sean is that his favorite classes are psychology and personal development.

To celebrate Earth Day this Friday, the Environmental club is hosting a spirit week this week. Tomorrow is tie dye day and Friday wear green for Earth Day.

Ironmen Fans:  Cheer on the Ironmen Boys' and Girls' Track teams when they compete against several other schools in the NCHS Invite this Friday starting at 4:30 pm.  Student admission is $3.00, adult admission is $4.00, and senior citizen admission is $3.00 – no Student Activity Passes or Unit 5 Family Passes will be accepted for this special event. This week's Senior of the Week is Chloe Hatcher. Chloe does not eat school lunch due since she has work program; her favorite teacher is Ms. Meredith; favorite TV show is Criminal Minds. Chloe plans to attend Eastern Kentucky University for forensic science. Something you may not have known about Chloe is that she would like to travel the world before she gets her dream job.

Why just Lunch, when you can Lunch and Learn? That's right ... we've got a SECOND awesome Lunch and Learn opportunity for you in the IMC this Thursday! Our speaker will be Laura Holland, with the 4-H Teen Teaching program. Ms. Holland and other NCHS students will be on hand to show off some cool tech gadgets and talk about the teen teaching program. This Friday, April 8th, the PRIDE club will be observing the Day of Silence. Stop by the PRIDE table at lunch during the week to find out more information about the club, the Day of Silence and ways that you can support your LGBTQ classmates.

Sophomores and Juniors - Are you interested in being a freshmen mentor for the 2022-2023 school year?  The FMP application link is available on the NCHS homepage and the deadline is tomorrow. All current sophomores and juniors are welcome to apply!

Congratulations to Freshman Himani Musku for scoring the highest overall for Illinois Math League this year!

Mu Alpha Theta is a high school math honorary for Juniors and Seniors that have an A average in their math classes. If you qualify and are interested in applying, scan the QR Code on all math classroom doors for details. You must apply by this Wednesday, March 30th.  If you are currently a member you do not need to fill out an application again!  See Mrs. Feeney if you have questions.

Bike Club will be having its spring informational meeting this Wednesday, March 30th, after school in room 10. Come to our short meeting to learn more about bike rides this club will be taking.  

Attention Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors...are you interested in joining class board next year?  It is a chance to be involved and to represent your class at NCHS.  A packet of information is posted on the NCHS website.  Plan to attend an information meeting on Thursday, March 31st using Google Meet. Students, please consider coming down to our first-ever Trades-Career Fair at NCHS this Friday, April 1st, during 2nd or 3rd hour. We have trade schools, police departments, apprenticeships, flight training, radiography, cosmetology, dental assisting, construction trades and more! Ironmen Soccer Fans: Cheer on the Varsity Girls’ Soccer team when they play two of their top rivals in the Intercity Tournament at home this week – Thursday at 4:30 pm versus Bloomington and Saturday at 2:00 pm versus Normal West.  Adult admission is $4.00 and student admission is $3.00 for each game – no Student Activity Passes or Unit 5 Family Passes will be accepted since these games are part of the Intercity tournament.  Good luck Lady Iron!

Happy women’s history month ironmen! 

Here are some female firsts to celebrate this week: 

  1. Sandra Day O’Connor was the first woman on the US Supreme Court
  2. Kamala Harris is the first female Vice President of the US
  3. Marie Curie was the first woman to win a Nobel Peace prize

In honor of women’s history month, Not in our School is hosting spirit week this week. Today, wear teal, Tuesday wear pink, Wednesday wear white, Thursday wear the rainbow, and Friday dress as your favorite woman! Join us on Wednesday March 16th for a listening circle all about women during your eighth hour in the senior cafeteria. Check with your 8th hour teachers in advance before attending!

Auditions for the student-directed Shakespeare Shorts are today, Monday the 14th, in room 33 after school. Everyone is welcome - you don't have to have experience and we translate the Shakespeare for you! Look for the QR code on the posters or go to the NCHS theater page.

This Wednesday, the 16th, is the NCHS French Club's March meeting. We are playing Bocce Ball and would love it if you’d join us after school in room 202. We are providing food along with prizes so we hope to see you there!

This week's senior of the week is Rachel Baker. Rachel's favorite school lunch is plain Avantis bread; favorite teacher Mr. Robinson; favorite movie Akira. Rachel plans to attend Heartland in the fall and figure out a potential career. Though as a backup, she aspires to major in environmental science. Something you may not have known about Rachel is that she's been interning at a fourth grade class over at Grove. She says it’s the best part of her day and is thankful for the program.

Congratulations to Elly Carrel, Reese Dalton, Caroline Johnson, Aiden Vinson, Anisha Amaravadi and Rebecca Kelly for having artwork accepted into the 95th Annual Art Competition. The show opened March 6 and runs through April at the McLean County Art Center. 

This week's senior of the week is Logan Yamada. Logan's favorite school lunch is chicken tenders; favorite teachers are Mr. Starkey and Mr. Keogh; favorite movie Star War Episode II. Logan plans to attend a 4 yr university and major in finance. Something you may not have known about Logan is that he is left handed.

Attention Ironmen Boys Basketball Fans: Support the Varsity Boys’ Basketball team when it competes in IHSA Class 4A Regional play tonight at 6:00 pm versus Pekin in the NCHS East Gym. Tickets are $5.00 per person and all fans must pay for admission - no Student Activity Passes or Unit 5 Family passes will be accepted since this is an IHSA playoff game. Cheer on the Ironmen as they attempt to advance to the Regional Championship Game at 7:00 pm Friday night. Let’s Go Iron!  

Attention juniors: Are you starting to think about what comes next after high school? Are you curious about the options for continuing your education? Whether you're interested in attending a trade school, university, or certificate program, we've got great information for you! Come to the IMC tomorrow for Lunch and Learn and we'll show you how to plan and research the next steps. 

Student Council is partnering with the Red Cross for our annual spring blood drive, this Friday, February 25th, from 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM. If you donate you will receive a Red Cross long sleeve t-shirt and a $10 Amazon gift card. Anyone 17 years and older can donate, and 16 year-olds can donate with a signed parent permission slip that can be found at our sign-up tables. These sign-up tables will be set up during lunch hours today and tomorrow. We hope you will help us reach our donation goal, especially because of the recent blood donation shortages. 

Calling all seniors! Senior class board needs your help designing a T-shirt for end-of-the-year senior sunset. The design will go on the front of the shirt and must follow these guidelines: maximum of 3 colors and includes the words “senior sunset,” “nchs,” and “class of 2022.” Go to @normalcommunity2022 Instagram and click the link in the bio to submit your design. The winner will receive a $15 gift card to their place of choosing, a free t-shirt, and their design will be used for the event. Submissions are due next Monday, February 28th.

The After-School Forge is reopening tomorrow for second semester! On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday after school each week, come find a place to study or get help from tutors in room 4, in the Senior Hallway, from 3:45-5:00. There is also a bus that runs at 5:15. Take advantage of this valuable resource starting tomorrow and continuing throughout the rest of the semester!

Student council is hosting the Winter Semi-Formal this Saturday, February 5th from 8:00-10:30 pm. Tickets are $5 and will be sold during lunch hours tomorrow through Thursday. No outside dates will be allowed.

Illinois Math League Competition is tomorrow, Tuesday Jan 11th, after school from 3:45 to 4:15 in the Cafeteria. All students in all levels of math are welcome. Hope to see you there.

Attention students taking dual credit and AP classes, do you have any textbooks sitting around that you have no use for? Or maybe you want to save money for a textbook for a class you know you need to take in the future? The Future Business Leaders of America will be hosting a textbook exchange for all students during lunch hours starting this Thursday, the 14th and extending into next week, till the 22nd, with a table outside the library. Bring a textbook for any Dual Credit class at NCHS or ACT, SAT and AP study books, and exchange it for a different one!

Attention Seniors! There will be a senior class meeting today in the auditorium at the beginning of your lunch hour. You will get important information regarding graduation and cap and gown orders. Also, Jostens will be in the atrium during lunch next Thursday, December 2nd and Friday, December 3rd to take your orders. You can also order online before December 3rd. 

Hey Ironmen! Project 7 bible club is today in room 208 from 3:35 to 4:15! Bring A friend and enjoy time with fellow students while strengthening your faith. And on behalf of your Normal Community P7, we hope you have an amazing Thanksgiving break! Snacks will be provided.

The Inclusive Education Coalition is holding a fundraiser concert this Saturday, November 20th, at the Coffee Hound in downtown Bloomington from 7-10 pm. Groups performing will be local band and rappers Disorganizer, V8 Vast Change, and Darius (Dur-eye-us). 20% of all purchases will be donated to IEC. Come enjoy drinks, snacks, and music for the benefit of a just education.

Week 10, Juniors & Seniors, for College Rep Visits!  Please welcome Aurora University on Tuesday and University of Iowa, University of Northern Iowa, and Alabama on Thursday!  

A sociology student is hosting a book drive as his project. It starts today and will go through November 19th. There will be a collection bin outside the IMC and in room 14. All books will be donated to local elementary schools and libraries.

Best Buddies is hosting a Dine to Donate this Wednesday, November 10th, at the Chipotle restaurant on College Avenue. It will run from 4 to 8pm. Dine in or order online and help our Best Buddies. 

Any student attending Heartland next fall--either graduating seniors OR College Now students--please join us this Friday, November 12th, for our HEARTLAND APPLICATION DAY in the IMC during lunch hours. Bring your laptop & social security number and we will get it completed! Drawings and prizes for those who come in!

Bloomington Area Career Center applications are now open on the BACC website under “About BACC - Enrollment Information.” Be sure to complete the Unit 5 application. Attention! Spanish Club's Dia de los Muertos celebration will be tomorrow, November 2nd, in the main cafeteria from 3:30-4:15. Please meet at the back by the Senior Cafe. We will do traditional crafts and have a contest with prizes. All are welcome!  

Girls and Boys Wrestling starts next Monday, November 8th. Anyone interested in wrestling can pick up a packet tomorrow, November 2nd, during lunch hours in room 99. If you can't make it to the pickup, find Coach Kaufman in Room 85 for information.

Come join the NCHS orchestras and animals from the Miller Park Zoo, this Thursday night for our 27th annual Hauntcert entitled "Escape!"  The show features singers, dancers, and well known music from movies such as the Lion King, Pink Panther, and Sing.  Admission is free and shows begin at 6:00 and 7:30 pm.  

Attention Ironmen Volleyball Fans: Support your varsity girls volleyball team as they play for the IHSA Class 4A Regional Championship this Thursday night at 6:00 pm in the East Gym. Looking for something fun to do this Halloween weekend? Key club is hosting games and a drive-in movie this Saturday, October 30th, behind the school. Games will be held from 3 to 5:30. The movie “Coraline” will be shown from 6 to 8. Concessions will be available and all proceeds will benefit St. Jude. 

Bloomington Area Career Center applications will be available starting next Monday, November 1st. The application is located on the BACC website under “About BACC - Enrollment Information.” Be sure to complete the Unit 5 application. There is a BACC Open House on November 9th at BACC from 5:30-7:00pm. If you have any questions, please see your school counselor.

If you have a Student Activity Pass on your current ID you will be admitted without paying – Student Activity Passes are accepted at both Unit 5 High Schools. If not, buy your ticket early at the regular student admission price of $3.00 and avoid waiting in line. The After-School Forge is now open! The After-School Forge is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3:45-5:00, and runs a bus at 5:15 to 16 stops around town if you need transportation home. Attention all mathletes! This year's math team will be running practices right after school on Mondays until 4:30 starting TODAY in Room 244! If you're interested in learning more or have questions about math team, find Mr. Florido or Ms. Shoukry.

Are you interested in gaining hands-on experience in government and learn about the inner workings of legislation? Homecoming dance tickets go on sale during lunch hours this week. Tickets will be sold in order of class so today, seniors can buy tickets for either the 7-8:30 session or the 9-10:30 session.  Cost is $10… cash or checks only. If you are bringing a date, make sure the date request form is filled out by 3:30 pm on Sept. 17th.  (Form was emailed to all students). 

Perhaps one of the most exciting homecoming events, NCHS' Color War is back! Join us for a color-filled game of Capture the Flag and more next week, (Monday, September 20th, from 5-7 PM). Tickets will be on sale every day this week for $6 during lunch in the atrium. You can sign up individually or as a group!

Juniors & Seniors:  This week starts our fall "College Admissions Rep Visit" season, which means many colleges & universities will be visiting our school to talk to interested students during the school day on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  If you're interested in attending a presentation, please sign up with Mrs. Hawkins in the College & Career Center, also known as the "CCC"!  This week, we welcome "Paul Mitchell The School" and "Western Illinois University."

All current National Honor Society members should have received an email from Mr. Knott regarding new officer elections. The Google Form required to have your name placed on the ballot must be completed by tomorrow, September 8th.

Looking for a way to volunteer in the community? Learn how by attending today’s meeting of the Key club, an international, student-led organization that gives members ways to provide service, build character and develop leadership. The Key club meeting is today at 3:30 in the senior cafeteria.

Ironmen Soccer Fans:  Cheer on the varsity boys’ soccer team when they play two of their top rivals in the Intercity Tournament at home this week – Thursday at 4:30 pm versus Bloomington and Saturday at 10:00 am versus Normal West.  Adult admission is $4.00 and student admission is $3.00 for each game – no student activity passes or Unit 5 family passes will be accepted since this is an Intercity tournament.  Good luck Iron Soccer!

Attention Ironmen JV Volleyball Fans:  Support your junior varsity girls’ volleyball team when they compete in the JV Intercity volleyball tournament this Saturday at NCHS.  The tournament is in round-robin format starting at 8:30 am.  Admission is $4.00 for adults and $3.00 for students and is good for the entire day - no student activity passes or Unit 5 family passes will be accepted since this is an Intercity tournament.  Let’s Go Lady Iron!

Mindful Iron, our school's meditation club, will be meeting for meditation every morning before school at 8 AM in room 14. We will also meet after school on Wednesdays in room 14. Please see Robinson with questions.

Don't miss the first drama club meeting of the year tomorrow, August 24, after school, in the auditorium.  Everyone is welcome.  We will talk about auditions, Festival, and the year ahead.

Auditions for the fall play, Zap!, are this Tuesday and Wednesday after school in the auditorium. You don't have to prepare or bring anything, and it's ok if you can't come to both days. If you have questions check out the web page on the school's website.

One of the best pieces of advice for ANY student at NCHS is to get involved. Whether that's through sports, clubs, or other extracurriculars, it's the best way to meet new people, learn more about yourself, and have lots of fun! Speaking of, here is a great opportunity for ALL students: introducing, FBLA: Future Business Leaders of America, which is hosting its first returning member meeting tomorrow, on Tuesday, August 24th, and its first New Member meeting on Tuesday, August 31st. FBLA is a diverse club with a plethora of opportunities including service projects, competitive events, and a networking chain that includes 250,000 members worldwide! If you're interested, be sure to attend! Again, for returning members, tomorrow, August 24th, and for new members, next Tuesday, August 31st.

Learn about your friends' culture, teach about your own, and enjoy delicious food in the process. Join the NCHS Cultural club in room 14 for an informational meeting this Thursday after school.

The first Spanish Club meeting of the year will be late next week! More information will be shared later this week and early next. If you are interested in running for exec board, please email Ms. Nutter with your name and year in school and she’ll email you an application. Completed forms are due to her by this Friday (8/27) by 4:00.

We are forming an Experiment Music Ensemble here at NCHS. Do you want to be in it? Music experience is great but not necessary. There will be an informational meeting after school Monday, August 30, in room 14. Please see Robinson with questions.

Music Tech Club is holding an informational meeting at 3:30 NEXT Monday (August 30th) in room 31. If you play or write music, and have an interest in collaborating with others while learning how to record, please join us! All genres and talents welcome!
