"Everywhere is a Stage Festival"
In response to COVID-19 restrictions, the high school theatre departments of McLean County Unit 5, Bloomington District 87, and University High School are joining together with the Theatre Education program at Illinois State University to create a unique opportunity for Bloomington/Normal students.
The “Everywhere is a Stage Festival” is a multiple-night, virtual performance of short plays that allow students to perform with actors, techies, and directors from each of the four schools. The online shows will stream twelve plays over five consecutive nights, November 16 - 20, beginning at 7 pm each night. The productions require a password for access (available on the webpage, www.everywhereisastage.weebly.com ) but are free of charge and will request donations through shirt sales to help defray costs.
Students submitted taped auditions and are attending rehearsals through online meetings. Individual shows are being directed by the 4 high school directors and 8 ISU students. All casts are a mixture of teens from each high school and all are performed as “Zoom theatre” to allow for social distancing from the safety of laptop computers. Digital performances are the ideal answer to safety concerns for casts, crews, and audience members. It also allows area youths to maintain the sense of community that educational theatre provides even in a pandemic, while providing the community with an important access to the arts.
