Monday, November 28th

Attention Juniors: Are you interested in doing the Internship Program, Intro to Ed, or Work Program next year? Info about each program and how to apply can be found on the NCHS website and your email from Infinite Campus. 

 

AAPI Culture Club is conducting an Asian snack sale on tomorrow, November 29th, during all lunch hours in the atrium. Come and try out different varieties of candy, chips, and other treats that are popular in various Asian countries!

 

Black Student Union and the French Club have teamed up to bring a “Mega” Holiday Drive to NCHS! This week FMP homerooms will make holiday cards for the elderly and veterans! The following week they will collect canned foods for the local food banks and toys for the Mclean County Toys for Tots drive. All grade levels are invited to donate canned goods and toys! Please drop off your items at the BSU and French club table in the atrium before school or during your lunch hour. The grade level that collects the most cans at the end of the week will get bragging rights! Monday, November 21st

Attention Ironmen Fans:  Support your NCHS Varsity Girls and Junior Varsity Boys Wrestling teams when they host the Ironmen Invitational at NCHS this Saturday, November 26, beginning at 9:30 am.  The admission price is $3.00 for students and senior citizens and $5.00 for adults - no Student Activity Passes or Unit 5 Family passes will be accepted since this is a special event.  Good luck Iron Wrestlers!

 

Are you interested in learning about the minorities in STEM while also gaining experience in the field of science yourself? Join Stem power club’s first informational meeting next Tuesday, November 29th, at 3:45 pm in room 212 at Normal West. Virtual options are available through the classroom google meet link. Monday, November 14th

Student Council will be hosting a blood drive this Friday, Nov. 18th. Students ages 16 and over can sign up to donate. Anyone who donates will receive a 10-dollar Egift card. Look for the sign up table today through Wednesday during the lunch hours!!!

Ready for some music mayhem? Sociology students are hosting a concert tomorrow night in the auditorium to raise money for the NCHS music program. For 5-dollars, you can enjoy music from the choir, band and orchestra. Doors open at 7:30. 

 

Mental Health club will be meeting this Wednesday, Nov. 16th, in room 241 at 3:30.

 

Ironmen Girls’ Basketball Fans:  Cheer on the varsity girls’ basketball team when they play in the Intercity Tournament over the next week in the NCHS East Gym. The 4 NCHS Intercity Girls’ Basketball games are as follows:  Monday, November 14 at 7:30 pm vs. U-High / Wednesday, November 16 at 7:30 pm vs. Central Catholic / Saturday, November 19 at 6:00 pm vs. Normal West / Tuesday, November 22 at 6:00 pm vs. Bloomington.  Student admission is $3.00 and Adult admission is $5.00 – no Student Activity passes or Unit 5 Family passes will be accepted since these games are all part of the Intercity tournament.  Good luck Iron!

 

This week's senior of the week is Megan Baker. Megan's favorite school lunch is the spicy chicken sandwich; favorite teacher is Mrs. Kelly; favorite TV show is Stranger Things. Megan plans to study phytology (plants) in college. Something you may not have known about Megan is that she loves to sew.

 

Wednesday, November 9th, 2022

Any sophomore who still wants to buy a Sophomore Class shirt can pick up a form in the main office. All profits go to raising funds for sophomore class board.

The Key Club member meeting is being held today right after school in the cafeteria until 4:15 pm. Key Club is also hosting a dodgeball event this Saturday, November 12, starting at 6:00 pm. There are flyers around the school to sign up for the final few spots to play. You can also just come to spectate for 2 dollars! Please come out and support your friends and NCHS Key Club. 

Auditions are today and tomorrow for the winter play!  Today, tomorrow, with callbacks by invitation only on Friday, after school,  in the auditorium.  Everyone is welcome, and no preparation is necessary.  See the web page at www.unit5.org/nchstheatre for details.

The IMC Book Club will meet this Friday, Nov. 11 at 7:45 a.m. in the IMC. Everyone is welcome at Book Club! See Ms. Fox Anvick with any questions.

Ruth plans to attend college to become a dentist. Something you may not have known about Ruth is that she is the middle child with four other siblings.

Attention Sophomores & Juniors: Our College 101 & Military Fair Night is tomorrow night starting at 6:30 in the auditorium. There will be 5 different sessions to choose from. Your future starts now! 

 

Two weekends ago the Normal Marching Band competed in the Illinois State Marching Band Championships at ISU. They placed first overall in their class, 6A, as well as winning caption awards in Best Visual, Music, General Effect, and the Crowd Appeal award. The NMB performed in the Finals for the first time in their history and placed 2nd overall out of 42 bands competing that day. This is the highest placement a Unit 5 group has ever placed in the Finals! Congratulations on a fantastic season!

Bloomington Area Career Center applications will be available starting TOMORROW November 1st. The application is located on the BACC website under “About BACC - 23-24 BACC Application”. Be sure to complete the Normal Community application. There is a BACC Open House on November 10th at BACC from 5:30-7:00pm.  If you have any questions, please see your school counselor. Remember, many programs will fill up fast!

Hola a todos! Join us at our Spanish Club meeting tomorrow (11/1) after school from 3:30-4:15 in the Senior cafeteria. We will be celebrating Dia de los Muertos with crafts, food, drinks and a friendly creative competition! Email Ms. Nutter with questions, and we hope to see you there!!!

Monday, October 24th. 

The After-School Forge is now open! The After-School Forge is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3:45-5:00 and runs a bus at 5:15 if you need transportation home. There is no need to sign up. Just bring your ID and your study materials. We’ll see you in the senior hallway at 3:45 starting tomorrow.

Attention seniors, need help completing your college applications? Come to the CCC today from 12:30-2:30 with your devices and questions. ELL students and students applying to Heartland community college can come for help  this Wednesday, Oct. 26th, from 9-11am in the IMC.

Boys interested in trying out for baseball, please attend one of two information meetings for fall and winter strength and conditioning. The meetings will be tomorrow, October 25th, at 3:40 in the Senior Cafeteria and  Wednesday, October 26th at 7:45 am in the Senior Cafeteria. You only need to attend one meeting. Email Coach Short if you have any questions.

 

Hispanic Heritage Club will have its first meeting of the semester this Wednesday, October 26th from 3:45 to 4:45pm in room 238. We are inviting any of our students, especially our Spanish-Speaking students, to come and join us for our first meeting! We will talk about the club, about Día de los Muertos, and about future meetings this semester. Any questions? Please contact Aurora Flores or Mr. King.

 

Anyone interested in hearing about what English classes in college are like should come to the IMC this Thursday during their lunch period for a special ISU English Lunch and Learn. Members of the ISU English department will talk to students about what to expect in their first year of college, what reading and writing in college level classes will look like and info on majoring in English. Bring your lunch Thursday and join us in the IMC. Please see Ms. Scott or Ms. Fox-Anvick with any questions.

 

All rise - Hauntcert 2022: Judgment Day, is now in session! Join us this Thursday night for the 28th annual Hauntcert. We’ll feature light-hearted courtroom drama, spooky Halloween music, and a special guest appearance by former NCHS principal Trevor Chapman and our beloved choir director Mr. L!  Admission is always free, and the shows begin at 6:00 pm and 7:30 pm.  Who will be found innocent, and who will be found guilty???  Come to the Hauntcert this Thursday night to find out!

Monday, October 17th

Attention all students, final picture retake days for the yearbook are being held today and tomorrow in the multipurpose room until 4. New students and all faculty are encouraged to have a photo taken. Appointments are not necessary.

Do you love math? Illinois Math League is a math contest given at schools across the state. Join us for the first Illinois Math League to show off your math skills. The contest is tomorrow, Tuesday October 18th, after school in the Senior Cafeteria from 3:40 to 4:10. See Mrs. Feeney with any questions.

 

German Club will meet tomorrow, October 18th, after school in Room 36. We will paint bears to honor the Buddy Bear United organization and its mission to promote understanding, trust and peaceful coexistence among different countries, cultures and ethnicities. There is a $2 fee for materials and students need to sign up by the end of the day today. If you have any questions, ask Frau Schnabel or Frau Moyer.

The entree fee is $5 per person and it covers food and activity costs. Come attend if you're interested in learning more about Diwali and participating in fun activities with friends!

 

This week's senior of the week is Roselyn Hernandez. Roselyn's favorite school lunch is the one she brings from home; favorite teacher is Mrs. Kelly, and favorite TV show is Parks and Recreation. Roselyn plans to travel the world and be an ultrasound technician. Something you may not have known about Roselyn is that she loves to read and teach preschoolers.

The following applies to Seniors only. Seniors meeting the academic requirement for National Honor Society should receive an invitation from Mr. Knott this week to apply for membership. Attention Ironmen. Are you interested in movies or animation? Consider joining the Film and Animation club to learn more about media production techniques and to work on your own media projects. We meet after school on the first Tuesday of each month, starting this week!. Contact Mr. Emberson if you have any questions.

Attention gamers! Come put your skills to the test and take your team all the way to the state championship. This year Unit 5 Esports will once again have a variety of Esports teams competing in various leagues throughout the school year.

Don't play? No worries! Beginners and experts are welcome! You can also take part in Unit 5 Esports by utilizing your skills. We'll need casters, game analysts, social media content creators, and video editors. Contact Mr. Emberson with your interest in gaming or content creation for this season, or attend our social gaming nights after school on the first Tuesday of each month. Our first meeting is this Tuesday from 3:30-6pm in room 65.

The Mental Health Club will meet on Wednesday, Oct 5th at 3:30 in Room 241.

The first Mock Trial meeting will be this Wednesday, October 5th after school in room 9. We will meet from 3:40 until about 5. The plan is to go over the basics of what Mock Trial is and find out a time (or times) to start meeting regularly to workshop and practice Mock Trial concepts before the case comes out in early November. Please let Mr. Shackley or Mr. King know if you have any questions! Hope to see you there.

Maximo plans to attend Heartland Community College next fall. Something you may not have known about Maximo is that his favorite season is fall.

Juniors and Seniors:  Please welcome Illinois State University, University of Alabama, University of Iowa, and the University of Illinois to the podium WEDNESDAY, 7th hour in the Auditorium. Sign up in SchooLinks and Google Form respectively.  Northwestern University will be presenting a virtual visit Thursday at 9:00 AM.  See Mrs. Hawkins with questions.

Ironmen boys get ready to bump, set, and spike! The Ironmen Volleyball Tournament will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, September 27. Today is the last day to sign up for your team.  The QR code for sign-ups and further details will be displayed on the Ironmen FBLA Instagram page. Senior teams are filled up but there are limited spots left for Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior teams!

Do you play a Wind Instrument, Guitar, Bass, Piano, or Drum set?  Are you interested in joining one of the Jazz Bands here at NCHS?  We will be having an informational meeting on Wednesday, September 28th from 3:30pm-4:15pm in Room 54, the Band Room.  See Mr. Carter for more information.

The Iron’s got talent show will be held this Wednesday, Sept. 28th, at 7pm in the auditorium. Tickets are $5. Come check out all the performances! 

It's trivia time again!  If you are interested in being on our trivia team, come check out scholastic bowl.   Join us this Thursday after school in room 212.  We have varsity and JV teams that compete against other schools during the winter season answering questions on a very wide variety of topics.  Any questions please stop and see Mr. Froelich or Miss Shoukry.

By the way, Happy Homecoming week! In case you didn’t know, today’s dress up day is “BBQ dads vs. Soccer Moms.” Tomorrow is Minion Day… Wednesday is Generations Day and Thursday is Groutfit day, which means wearing all shades of gray.

The homecoming dance will be held this Saturday, Oct. 1st, in the big gym. Students must have a print out of their ticket or have it on their phone to be scanned. A photo/school ID is also required. All bags and purses will be searched and water and cookies will be served.

Hey Ironmen! Students with the Youth Global Citizen program are currently hosting a fundraiser for the Community Health Care Clinic, a local non-profit here in Normal. They provide free healthcare for people in need. $1,000 helps 144 people with all of their diabetic needs for three whole months. You can help by bringing donations to your third hour class from now till this Friday, Sept. 23rd. The class with the most donations will win free donuts next Monday, Sept. 26th. Make a difference in our community, and get some donuts while you’re at it

Homecoming week is next week… so here’s some important information you need to know:

The homecoming dance will be held Oct. 1st in the big gym. In-person ticket sales are being held this week in the atrium. Tickets are $10 and you can choose to attend one session… either at 6pm or 8:30pm. Sales are open to seniors today and the other classes the rest of the week. You can also buy tickets online starting this Saturday. Online tickets will cost $11.50. Remember to submit a date request form for students from other schools.

Attention Seniors - we will be conducting homecoming court nominations today from 8:30-3:30. Please visit the senior google classroom page to make your nominations. If you have any questions please talk to Mr. Schweinberg. Also, seniors interested in purchasing a class T-shirt must have orders and money in by this Friday, Sept 23rd. Order forms and drop off are in the main office. See a senior class board member with questions.

Attention Junior and Senior girls playing powder puff  - your shirts will be distributed after school tomorrow in the IMC. Please be sure to make arrangements to pick up your shirt promptly after school. If you are unable to pick up your shirt please make arrangements with a friend to pick it up for you. See Ms. Deal in room 218 with any questions. The second powder puff practice is this Saturday, Sept 24, from 1-3. Teams will be announced this Friday Sept 23.

This Friday is also the start of Homecoming spirit week. Wear orange and black or your jersey on Friday. Be sure to check the TVs in the atrium for next week’s dress up days. 

This Sunday after the powderpuff football game, Student council is hosting a drive-in movie from 7:30-9:30PM. The movie “Mean Girls” will be shown in the grassy area behind the school, in front of the tennis courts. Concessions, including popcorn, candy, drinks, and pizza will be available! Free admission, and we will have 6 free AMC movie passes to giveaway! Be sure to bring a blanket or chair to sit on!!

Music Tech Club is meeting at 3:35 today and tomorrow in room 14. Today, we will be learning how to do some basic sampling for production. Attention Ironmen Volleyball Fans: Support your varsity girls’ volleyball team as they compete in the Intercity volleyball tournament this Saturday at NCHS.  The tournament is in round-robin format starting at 8:30 am. Admission is $5.00 per person for everyone and is good for the entire day - no Student Activity Passes or Unit 5 Family Passes will be accepted since this is an Intercity tournament. Let’s Go Iron Volleyball!

This week's Senior of the week is Emma Conover. Emma's favorite school lunch is the deli sandwich line; favorite teacher is Mrs. Lawrence; favorite TV show is Gilmore Girls. Emma plans to major in health sciences on a pre-med track. Something you may not have known about Emma is that she plays volleyball.

Attention all students, just a reminder that tomorrow is our first half day of the semester. The half day ends at 11:30am and there are no homerooms. A free grab and go lunch is available for everyone but only if you’ve signed up by the end of today. Look for QR codes in the cafeteria to sign up. Today marks the first Birthday Treat Table of the year over the lunch hours.  Today Student Council would like to wish a special Happy Birthday to all students and staff who have a birthday in September. Attention Ironmen Fans: Support your NCHS girls’ swimming & diving teams when they compete in the Iron Invite this Saturday at the NCHS pool. Diving events begin at 8:30 am and swimming events begin at 12:00 pm.  The admission price is $3.00 for students and senior citizens and $5.00 for adults and is good for the entire day - no Student Activity Passes or Unit 5 Family passes will be accepted since this is a special event. Good luck Lady Iron Swimmers & Divers!

Another homecoming tradition is being revitalized! The Ironmen Volleyball Tournament will take place Tuesday, September 27. This is an exciting opportunity for guys to stay engaged during Homecoming week. Teams of up to 10 boys from one grade with a limit of 2 teams per grade level can participate. The QR code for sign-ups and further details will be displayed on the screens in the atrium and on the Ironmen FBLA Instagram page. This will be a first come first serve registration so sign up soon!

This week's senior of the week is Addy Weyrauch. Addy's favorite school lunch is tacos; favorite teacher is Ms. Baker; favorite movie is The Blindside. Addy plans to attend ISU and study to be an educator. Something you may not have known about Addy is that she loves to paint with watercolors.

If you are a student who is interested in teaching math or English to younger children, consider joining the Rohingya Refugee Project. This new club will help create tutoring videos for refugees and orphans in Bangladesh. For more information, come to the informational meeting after school this Thursday in room 6.

Ironmen football fans:  Due to the large crowd anticipated for Friday’s 7:00 pm home football game against Normal West, early ticket sales will be held in the Athletic Director’s office Thursday and Friday from 7:30-3:30.  If you have a Student Activity Pass on your current ID you will be admitted without paying. If not, buy your ticket early at the regular student admission price of $3.00 and avoid waiting in line. Let your parents know that they can buy their tickets ahead of time as well.  Let’s Go Iron!

A reminder to Ironmen sports fans: In order to enter regular season home athletic events without paying, you must have your current year student ID with the Activity Pass logo – the “N” in the lower right corner. If you do not have your current ID with Activity Pass, you will be required to pay the $3.00 admission fee to attend events. If you purchased an Activity Pass, stop by the IMC with a receipt to have the pass printed. 

Interested in NCHS history and archival work? Consider joining Archive Club. Archive Club meets on Mondays after school in room 12. Contact Mr. Watts with questions.

Do you write or record music? Are you looking to collaborate with other musicians? Music Tech Club is having an informational meeting today @ 3:35 in Room 14 to kick off fall semester. All levels of experience are welcome! We will hold our first official meeting TOMORROW from 3:35 PM to 5 PM also in Room 14. Contact Mr. King or Mr. Wiechman for more info!

Best buddies will its first official meeting this Thursday, Sept. 1st, at 3:45 in the cafeteria. Best buddies is a club that promotes inclusivity among those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. 

 

Chess club will have its first meeting this Wednesday, August 31st, after school. We will meet in room 234. All skill levels are welcome to join!

Come to the IMC during your lunch period this Thursday for our first Lunch and Learn of the school year! We will be hosting leaders from the 4-H Teen Teacher program who will be here to recruit students to act as teachers and mentors for youth in the community. Ironmen Soccer Fans:  Cheer on the varsity boys’ soccer team when they play two of their top rivals in the Intercity Tournament at home this week – Today at 4:30 pm versus Central Catholic and Saturday at 10:00 am versus U-High.  Adult admission is $5.00 and student admission is $3.00 for each game – no student activity passes or Unit 5 family passes will be accepted since this is an Intercity tournament.  Good luck Iron Soccer!

Future Business Leaders of America will be hosting its first returning member meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, August 23rd, and its first New Member meeting next week, Tuesday, August 30th. FBLA is the premier business organization at Community with opportunities including exciting social events, service projects, competitive events, and a networking chain that includes 250,000 members worldwide! We'd love to see you there! Again, for returning members, tomorrow, August 23rd, and for new members, next Tuesday, August 30th in the cafeteria.

 

Students interested in being a part of the art club are invited to an informal meeting tomorrow, August 23rd, in room 40 starting at 3:40pm. The meeting will last about 20 minutes.
