Transportation

People on a sidewalk hold signs and cheer at a school bus as it passes

Transportation Service provides transportation to the more than 11,000 Unit 5 students. Each day, 135 buses and vans pick up and drop off over 9,000 students for school. In addition to the regular school day at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels, students are transported to Early Childhood, Pre-K programs, Regional Alternative, and several special education and work programs during the day.

Significant features of the Transportation facilities include:

  • A majority of the buses are equipped with onboard cameras. Tapes must be removed from the camera the same day as the incident occurs due to four-hour rollover of recording. Parents and staff needing to see these tapes must request a viewing the day of the incident.
  • Ability to support 131 buses, which include wheelchair buses with a capacity of 15 students, up to our largest buses, which hold 84 passengers, three to a seat.
  • On-site parking for all staff and drivers.
  • Full repair facilities, including lifts and shops, for regular maintenance and light repair of all Unit 5 buses and vehicles.
  • Driver support facility with meeting area and dispatch operations.
  • Extensive paved lot built for heavy loads and long-term use
