  • Hello! Welcome to Mrs. Smith's classroom website! I am so thrilled to be able to share the school year with you! I think we are going to have a fantastic year!

I am married and have three wonderful children. My two oldest children graduated from Normal Community West High School and my youngest is in high school. I also have one pet dog.

I received my bachelor's degree in middle- level education in May of 2011 with endorsements in language arts and reading; however, I absolutely love math! I participated in Illinois State University's year-long PDS program at PJHS teaching 7th grade lit & comp and language arts. I worked as a substitute teacher, a homebound instruction teacher, and as a general education paraprofessional with the 4th grade team at Prairieland. I have taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. I am excited to teach 5th grade again this year with a great team!
This year we are using a workshop approach in reading, writing, and math.   We will continue to use Words Their Way for word study and we also have some really exciting and interesting units in science and social studies.
Communication is very important to me and I will do my best to keep the website updated as much as possible. I try to update the homework page daily because it provides an opportunity to share what we are doing in the classroom more easily with parents and family members. It is also helpful when a student is absent or has forgotten their assignment notebook. I will email families with classroom updates and news periodically. If you have any questions or have any feedback, please feel free to contact me at smithte@unit5.org.
