This theme-based course focuses on taking contemporary literature and analyzing it through a global lens. Throughout the units, we will work on narrative, persuasive, and analytical writing, as well as speech, grammar, and research skills.

    Fall major works:

     ·        When the Emperor Was Divine

     ·        Hiroshima

     ·        Things Fall Apart

    Spring major works:

     ·        A Midsummer Night's Dream

     ·        To Kill a Mockingbird

     ·        Persepolis

Please note: this is an honors course. Students will be expected to engage in higher level thinking on a daily basis. This includes (but is not limited to) discussions, group projects, independent work, presentations, and written work.

All of the required texts in the Unit Five English Curriculum were carefully chosen by a group of highly-qualified, informed, and professional educators. It is their belief that these works serve to help each student meet the standards laid-out by NCTE and the Common Core Standards. While we believe that all students will benefit from studying these texts, if a student or parent has a concern about a particular work, they should address it with their teacher to determine an appropriate course of action which may include an alternative text for that student.
