Yes. The state requires that a student less than 18 years of age complete 50 hours of practice driving, including 10 hours of nighttime driving. The law requires a parent, legal guardian, or other responsible adult to provide written consent at the time of the application for a driver's license verifying that the applicant is sufficiently prepared and able to operate a motor vehicle safely.What are the student eligibility requirements in order to take driver education?
Each student must be enrolled in high school and receive a passing grade in at least eight courses during the previous two semesters prior to enrolling in a driver education course. If a pupil is a freshman, school districts may count passing grades from the last semester of the student’s eighth-grade school year.Is driver's education required of new drivers under age 18?

Behind-the-Wheel Questions
When will students be enrolled in Behind-the-Wheel?
Once students complete all the requirements for Driver Education classroom, their name will go on a wait list for Behind-the-Wheel. Placement of students is based on birth date and availability during certain class periods. Students will typically drive during their lunch periods, study halls, or P.E. classes. Behind-the-Wheel will not appear on a student’s schedule since it is only a six week course.How do students sign-up for Behind-the-Wheel?
Students are automatically signed-up for Behind-the-Wheel once they complete all the requirements for Driver Education classroom. Mr. Price will contact students approximately 2 weeks prior to them starting Behind-the-Wheel.How many hours must a student accumulate with a Driver Education instructor during Behind the Wheel?
The state requires students to receive a minimum of 6 clock hours of Behind-the-Wheel instruction in a dual control car on public roadways taught by a certified driver education instructor. Regular attendance is critical so students receive the state required 6 clock hours of Behind-the-Wheel.What are the fees associated with Driver Education?
Classroom Driver Education has a $100 fee which is typically paid at registration. During Driver Education classroom, there will also be a $20 permit application fee that will need to be collected before a student can obtain their permit. This fee goes towards the instructional permit and the first driver’s license.
Behind-the-Wheel has a $300 fee that does not need to be collected till they complete Behind-the-Wheel. Students that qualify for the reduced lunch program will have their fee reduced to $150 and students that qualify for the free lunch program will have their fee waived.

How do I check to see if my student’s high school has submitted his/her completion information, and the information has been approved by the Secretary of State’s office?

Under the column “Parents/Students”, click on “A-Z Index”
On the alphabet bar, click on “D” (for Driver Education)
Click on “Driver Education Student License Inquiry”https://sec1.isbe.net/driveredweb/Inquiry.asp
The student’s permit number should be typed in the space available. If the completion information has been submitted by the student’s high school and uploaded to the Secretary of State’s office (without errors), the screen will indicate that the student is approved to get his or her license. Please remember that this only indicates if the completion information has been submitted and approved. The student still has to hold his or her permit for the required time.
What information will I need to bring with me to the Driver's Facility when I go to get my driver’s license?
