Meta Tags

If you want to ensure that your pages are searchable both on the website and on the internet, you need to have a good set of Meta Tags built into each page.  Without them, search engines have a difficult time categorizing and listing a web document.

For more information about Meta Tags, go here.

Here is a meta-tag and site tag generator for School Webmasters to use to create their <HEAD> tags correctly.  Just enter the site description and up to 10 keywords as directed, then cut and paste the tag lines into the <HEAD> section of your HTML.  Enjoy!

Here is your META - tag coding.
Put it in the HEAD of your HTML document.

Some Basic Meta Tags and What The Are:

"xxxx" stands for any content contained inside the tags

  • <TITLE> xxxx </TITLE> - Page Title as shown in the Browser, search engines sometimes use this to help catalog a page
  • <META NAME="Title" CONTENT=" xxxx "> - Usually a repeat of the <TITLE> tag contents, but may be unique.  Should not exceed 250 letters/characters.
  • <META NAME="Description" CONTENT=" xxxx "> - Used by some search engines as the search result description.
  • <META NAME="Keywords" CONTENT=" xxxx "> - very important to some search engines during the cataloging process.  This tag will contain a list of words relevant to the page the tag is on; alternative spellings, and word variations are suggested here.
  • <META NAME="Subject" CONTENT=" xxxx "> - Used to help clarify the cataloging process by some search engines.
  • <META HTTP-EQUIV="Keywords" CONTENT=" xxxx "> - Used by some search engines to help refine the cataloging process, not used by all.

How do you put these Meta Tags in, where do they go?

The quickest way, especially if you are going to use a template* to build your site, is to just add them using the HTML editing view in Front Page.  A second way, which you may find more convenient, is to let Front Page put the tags in for you:

  • In Page view, right-click the page, and then click Page Properties on the shortcut menu.
  • Click the Custom tab.
  • Under User variables, click Add.
  • In the Name box, type the name of the variable.
  • In the Value box, type the value of the variable.

Simple.  If you look at the actual HTML code of your page, you will notice the following in every Front Page 2000 generated page (at the top) that is not modified by you or someone else:

Please Note:

There are three tags, generated automatically by Front Page 2000, that you should leave in.  Without these tags, certain problems may arise in the future, specially in editing them via Front Page 2000 or using web components provided by Front Page 2000.

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">

<meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 4.0">

<meta name="ProgId" content="FrontPage.Editor.Document">

This is a page that has been tagged with various Meta Tags so that the page is more easily indexed by our own search engine and by search engines on the internet.

* A template is a page or pages you build that is used to create every page of your website... it ensures consistency and speeds up the process of building a site as well as adding content in the future.
