Superintendent
Dr. Gary Niehaus,
Superintendent
February 6, 2008
Dear Unit 5 Community Members,
On behalf of the Unit 5 Board of Education and Administration,
it is my honor to thank you for your support of the referendum questions
on the February 5, 2008 ballot. This demonstration of our
community's strong commitment to education will allow Unit 5 to
address the growth the district is experiencing while continuing
to educate each student to
achieve personal excellence.
Although election day has passed, our work to plan for the
construction, renovation, and operation of school facilities
is ongoing. In the coming weeks and months, we will share
frequent updates on the progress of these processes.
Again, thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Gary C. Niehaus
Superintendent
Unit 5 - The Superintendent
Extract from Board Policy Manual: No. 3.40
Duties and Authority
The Superintendent is the District's chief executive officer and is responsible for the administration and
management of the District schools in accordance with Board policies and directives, and state and federal law. The general duties and authority of the
Superintendent are developed in collaboration with
the Superintendent, approved by the Board, and contained in the Superintendent's position description. The
Superintendent is authorized to develop administrative procedures to implement Board policy.
The Superintendent may delegate to other District staff members the exercise of any powers and the discharge of any duties imposed upon the
Superintendent by Board policies or by Board vote. The delegation of power or duty, however, shall not relieve the
Superintendent of responsibility for the action which was delegated.
Qualifications and Appointment
The Superintendent must be of good character and of unquestionable morals and integrity. The
Superintendent shall have the experience and the skills necessary to work effectively with the Board, District employees, students, and the community. The
Superintendent shall have a valid administrative certificate and
Superintendent's endorsement issued by the State Certification Board.
When the office of the Superintendent becomes vacant, the Board will conduct a search to find the most capable person for the position. Qualified staff members who apply for the position will receive the same consideration as other candidates.
