Greetings! Welcome to a little bit about me!
My name is Karen Showalter. I grew up on a farm near Towanda, Illinois. My husband and I are both Unit 5 graduates. I attended Towanda Elem., Chiddix Jr. High, and NCHS. I went on to receive my Bachelor's in Science degree in communications from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and my Master's in Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Illinois State University.
I have my national certification in speech-language pathology (CCC), my teaching certificate (Type 10), and my Illinois Professional License to provide speech-language pathology services (IDPR, L). I am a member of our local speech-language organization (CISHA) and national organization (ASHA). In addition, I am involved with a local stuttering support group through Illinois State University.
My first job was working for both Creve Coeur School District and Head Start in Woodford County. The commute was a little dreary for me and I came to work for Unit 5 at Sugar Creek Elem. the fall of 1995. After having my second child in the the spring of 2000, I opted to be a stay-at-home mom. During this time, I did some evaluation work for the El Paso School District. When my youngest child went to kindergarten, I returned to work part-time for Unit 5 at Carlock Elem. I was there for 2 years before returning to full-time work and Sugar Creek Elem. in 2007. My position currently consists of 3 days a week at Sugar Creek Elem. and 2 days a week providing services to Private/Parochial/Homeschool students located within the Unit 5 school district. I really enjoy working at Sugar Creek!
If you have any questions or concerns regarding speech-language development, your child's progress, etc., please feel free to contact me by phone or email.
Kind regards,
Karen Showalter
