The workhorses of our language
include four major parts of speech: (1) nouns, (2) verbs, (3) adjectives, and
(4) adverbs. To this list, we should add some of the pronouns, primarily those
denoting people (e.g., he, she, you, they) and some others. These words carry
the bulk of your messages. Though some of the others – conjunctions,
prepositions, other pronouns and interjections – do contain some meaning, the
gist of what you say ordinarily rides on the backs of the working words.
