    1. Sentence Structure
      1. Simple                   {These have one independent clause}
        1. The dog ran.
        2. The boy was singing

         

      2. Compound           {These have two or more independent clauses joined by conjunctions}
        1. The boy was singing and the girl was dancing.
        2. The dog ran and the cat followed.

         

      3. Complex {These have one independent clause and one or more subordinate clauses}
        1. The dog ran after the cat meowed.
        2. The girl danced as the boy was singing.

         

      4. Compound Complex {These have one or more subordinate clauses and two or more independent clauses}
            a.
        The dog ran and the cat followed after the cat meowed.
            b.
        The dog ran and the girl was dancing as the boy was singing.
