Poetry Writing: Introduction to Poetry

Poetry packet.
DESCRIPTION:
Poetry is a form of literature that uses rich language. This course provides a
background of the methods poets use to study poetic form and will provide the
student with a working knowledge of at least eleven different forms of poetry.
GOALS:
- Understand the use of figurative language in writing.
- Identify and use rich language and proper form in
writing poetry.
- Apply knowledge of language and poetic form in
creating a poetry notebook.
- Read a wide variety of poetry by many authors.
REQUIREMENTS:
All students will participate in class and read at least two original poems to
the class and be required to recite a published poem of at least ten lines. The
opportunities for participating will be provided in class. Each student will be
required to submit their original work for grading during class. Student poetry
will create a notebook to be submitted at the end of the poetry unit.

All notebooks will be word processed and will include a table of
contents.
Additional credit poetry will be included after the minimum
requirements are met.
EVALUATION:
Grades will be based on your completed poetry and poetry reading checks, student
participation in class, presentations of poetry and a completed notebook.

All notebooks must be turned in, on or before
December 12, 2008
STUDY ASSISTANCE: class time will be arranged as poetry workshops and students
will be given assistance during this time.
Homework Readings:
Students need to read these works
before coming to Language Arts
class on the due date listed. Personal choice poetry begins on the 23rd of
October. In personal choice poetry be aware of the author, and know
something interesting about the poem.
