Student Activity 1
Introduction
The story, The Pigman, takes place in New York City. You will have an opportunity to
become familiar with this famous city through virtual visits to several
sites on the internet.
With your teacher, please review your school´s
acceptable use policy for work on the Internet. Also, links to the web
often change. Tell your teacher when you find a link that doesn't work.
The Task
On a map of New York City, locate the boroughs
of New York, include Staten Island and Manhattan. At the end of the story
you will trace the adventures of John, Lorraine and Mr. Pignatti as they
travel through the story. Visit virtual maps and other sites of New York and familiarize
yourself with the city.
The Process: Exploring the Web, Creating a
Product
You will create a map of New York, include the
borough of Staten Island. As you read the story put X's to mark all of
the major places the characters visit. By the end of the story
you should be able to trace the characters steps as they travel through
New York.
- Use a large paper, a
ruler, and some marking pens or crayons.

- Draw an outline of the New York boroughs.
- As you read the story, put an X on the places the characters
visit.
- Make sure to include the Guggenheim Museum and the Staten Island
Zoo.
- Decide where each of the characters might live and put an X on each
of their homes, too.
