Young Authors 2009

Dear Families,

Wouldn’t you love to have a wonderful keepsake of your child’s writing and imagination from each year s/he is in school?  It’s Young Author time!  The Young Author program is an opportunity for students to take part in writing and publishing a book.  The emphasis is on students learning the writing process.  The books should be original with limited parent involvement.

Finished stories will be due to Mrs. Schumacher by Friday, February 6th            !  Each participant will receive a prize for entering their book.  As the stories are read, a panel of teachers will be awarding special awards, including three books that will be chosen to represent Fox Creek Elementary.  These three books will be sent on to the district level to be judged with the books from the other elementary schools.  From that group, representatives will be chosen by 6th grade panelists, and those authors will be sent to the Young Author Conference at Illinois State University in the spring.

If you have any questions, or need more information, please give me a call at school or email me at Schumaaj@unit5.org.  Happy Writing!

                                                                   Sincerely,

                                                                   Mrs. Schumacher

Young Authors Contest 2009

What is the Young Authors Contest?

The Young Author program is a writing experience open to all Unit 5 students in grades K-6.

Students create their own original book, complete with illustrations and cover.

What kinds of books can I write?

You can write any kind of book you can read!  Some examples include:  non-fiction, fiction, mystery, poetry collection, play, science fiction, biography, autobiography, alphabet, animal, or short story collection.

What will the books be judged on?

All completed books will be judged on:  interest to other children, originality, creativity, lack of spelling and grammatical errors, quality of illustrations and cover design, and use of story elements.

Can my parents help at all?

This is a “Young Author” contest which means that you need to have the ideas, write them down and do the illustrations.  Your parents can help you by listening to your ideas, help you organize your thoughts, proofread your rough draft and type your final copy.

Any other important tips?

Two students may co-author a book together.  Illustrations may be hand drawn, photos or pictures from magazines or the computer.  Use all of your senses to help you write!

How do I enter into this contest?

Completed books need to be submitted by Friday, February 6th           to your classroom teacher.  All of the books will be reviewed and four books will be chosen to represent Fox Creek.  Those four books will be judged by middle school students enrolled in the language arts DEAP program.  One book will be chosen from this group to represent Unit 5 in the statewide Young Author Contest at ISU in the spring.  We will have a Young Author Celebration for all participants.  You will receive your book back with a certificate of participation and a prize!  We hope your parents can join us for this celebration.

Anything else?

If you need any help or have any questions, please ask Mrs. Schumacher.  This may be a required class project or you may need to work on it at home in your spare time.  Do your best and have fun being creative and creating something that you will be able to cherish forever!

Good luck and happy writing!

                                                                             Sincerely,

                                                                             Mrs. Schumacher
