Why do we do vocabulary:
Vocabulary is an important part of reading comprehension. On the End of Selection Test, the first six questions pertain to the vocabulary from the unit. This is done in an effort to help students build strategies to understand vocabulary in context.

At home Practice:
In
case you are stuck, here is a strategy we suggest to practice at home.
Step 1: You will need 4 index cards for each vocabulary word.
Step 2: Have them write the vocabulary word on the first, the definition on the second (Which can be found from the Language Arts Page) , a synonym on the third, and an antonym on the fourth. If they are having trouble finding synonyms or antonyms, try Merriam Webster On-line Thesaurus (This is not a content edited site so I suggest parental supervision)
Step 3: Spread out only the definitions, then have your child match the definition to the spelling word
Step 4:Check for correctness
Step 5: Repeat, steps three and four, two more times.
Step 6: Repeat steps three through five; first, with the synonyms; then, with the antonyms.
Once your child can accurately do each of the steps above, give them an oral exam. Show a note card with a vocabulary word and ask them to give you the definition, synonym, antonym, and to use it in a sentence. Give student immediate feedback after each vocabulary word.
