Reading Comprehension

Why?

Our end of selection test features 14 questions about reading comprehension.  It is one way we gauge students understanding of the story.

How?

We give the exam open book, this allows students to go back and reread the material.  This prepares students well for ISAT, because it gets them in the habit of going back into the text to search for answers.

What Parents Can Do at Home to Help Students With Reading Comprehension:Go to fullsize image

Before Reading:

-Encourage your child to examine the book (cover, pictures, illustrations, pages, and then make predictions)

-Remind your child of past experiences or feelings which may prepare him/her for the book

-Connect ideas in the book to what your child already knows.

During Reading:

-Stop reading periodically

-Help your child to:

  1) make predictions   (I think ... will happen)

  2) ask questions  (Do you think she meant to do that?)

  3) summarize  (So far .....)

  4) discuss new words  (what do you think ... meant?)

After Reading:

-Ask important questions that require thinking.  Try to make some questions relating to the text to what your child already knows.

-Respond to your child's questions.

-Clear up any confusion about the reading

-Discuss likes/dislikes about the reading and why.
