How To Study Spelling At Home

Each Week your child will be given a spelling packet.  Completing this packet is the best way for your child to study.  In addition to the spelling packet using the below method will give your a better opportunity to learn the spelling words.

Your child should study these words each day using the following method (that I will later refer to as SS/CWC):

SEE and look carefully for the easy and the hard parts of the word.

SAY the word. Touch each letter and say its name aloud.

COVER the word with a card, piece of paper, or hand.

WRITE the word from memory.

Uncover the original word and CHECK to see if correct. (This step is especially important.)  Your child should touch each letter from the original word list and the word the child has just written and spell it aloud as each letter is checked.  They will need to use two hands for this if done correctly.

If there are errors, s/he should cross though the misspelled word and rewrite it correctly (for example: tew        two).

Repeat steps 3 - 6, two more times, moving across the page.

After you child has studied this way, give him/her a written dictation test on these words.  After each word is written, let him/she self-correct the word looking at your list while the other words are covered up.  If a word is misspelled s/her should cross through it and write it correctly.  Do not let him/her just "fix it".  Require that s/he rewrite the word correctly.  Do let him/her self correct each word as it is dictated as this gives immediate feedback and allows the student to learn from mistakes reducing errors on the other words on the list.

NOTE: For all practice activities, have your child use a pencil with an eraser (Not a pen), and give attention to correct use of lower case and capital letters.
