Welcome !
Just
an introduction....I am co-teaching in 5 classrooms this year, Mrs. Mandros' Kindergarten, Mrs.
Vercruysse's 1st grade, Mrs. Halsey's, Mrs. Hutson's and
Mrs. Lenz's 2nd grade. It is a busy year with lots of activity! I
have prep time first thing in the morning until 8:30 a.m., so you can best contact
me by phone or in person between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m., or after 3:15 p.m. I check
my e-mail in the morning or after school, so I can respond to e-mails at stattosb@unit5.org.
I
have been teaching at Prairieland since it first opened. I have worked in
the Kindergarten, First grades, Second grades, and 4th grades at
Prairieland. I have taught for 19 years, teaching in the general education
classrooms, grades 1-6, and in Special Education Learning Disabilities Resource,
Learning Disabilities Self-Contained, Early Intervention, and in the Inclusive
Co-teaching settings. I graduated from the University of Iowa with a
Bachelor's degree in General Studies, receiving my teaching certificate and
endorsement in reading. While teaching in the classroom, I later obtained
my Master's degree at the University of Iowa in Special Education.
My
family moved to Illinois in 1986. Gary, my husband, works at State Farm
Insurance as
a Systems Analyst. My daughter, Chelsea, works for the Illinois Farm
Bureau as an Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom state wide coordinator. My son,
Kyle, is a senior at the University of Illinois, majoring in
Speech Communication.
I
think Prairieland offers unique settings for our students and am proud to say
that I am a part of it.

Kids Who Are Different
Here's to the
kids who are different,
The kids who don't always get A's
The kids who have ears twice the size of their peers,
And noses that go on for days...
Here's to the kids who are different,
The kids they call crazy or dumb,
The kids who don't fit, with the guts and the grit,
Who dance to a different drum...
Here's to the kids who are different,
The kids with the mischievous streak,
For when they have grown, as history's shown,
It's their difference that makes the unique.

+Sensory Room Information:
Thanks to the generosity of
Prairieland's parent organization, (PIECE), and monetary awards received through
the Beyond the Books program and the Carol Berry Memorial Literacy Grant
program, Prairieland has been able to establish a Sensory Room! Continued
financial support has come from State Farm Insurance Companies Foundation Good
Neighbor Grants™,
and Prairieland family donations.
The Sensory Room is available to
students in need of an alternative learning or break environment without the
pressures found in a larger, more traditional classroom. With the special
equipment available, this room provides stimulation in visual, auditory,
tactile, and physical formats to compensate for a sensory loss. Children are
allowed to spend supervised, short intervals during the day, so they are better
able to function in the classroom. The facility provides our staff an
opportunity to allow students to find a place to stimulate or relax as needed
and return to the classroom ready to participate and function in a more
inclusive manner.
An entire classroom may be affected by
one student's inability to participate in a productive manner. The Sensory Room
allows individual students to 'reprogram' themselves and rejoin the classroom
activities. The classroom environment is also quickly restored to a positive
learning environment.
