There are so many ways to use technology in the classroom.  These are just a few of the ways that you can use technology as a professional in your career and as an educator in your classroom.  Technology is a life long skill that your students will use long after they leave your classroom.  It will help them now and later. There are many ways to use technology as a professional that affect your classroom but may it directly involve or affect your students:
  • Newsletters
  • Class Web Sites
  • Data Organization (databases and spreadsheets)
  • Email networking with colleagues
  • Presentations and documents for seminars, workshops, parent/curriculum nights, etc.

Practical Connections

  • Students can use productivity tools to create documents and presentations.
  • Students can publish work to the web.
  • Students can view their work and communicate with you.
  • Parents can view work, get information, and communicate with you.
  • Here are some ways that I have used technology in my classroom that have proved successful:
  • Classroom website 5M
  • Created a classroom handbook in Word, saved as PDF, and placed online
  • Created a parent email group for quick and easy communication
  • Created a parent night presentation to model the technology and present the needed information Parent Night
  • Created a class spreadsheet with contact info, birthdays, etc. for easy access and sorting
  • Place study guides and practice test online for download
  • Update homework nightly and provide guidelines to projects and pictures of completed projects
  • Created review games  Math Game
  • Had students create websites as choice projects  Mars Page
  • Allow students to create homework on computer at home and email it to me
  • Students create presentations for Social Studies, more
  • Students create graphs (more) to present and then print after collecting and analyzing data
  • Classroom newsletter with student spotlight and picture
  • Scan student work for inclusion in projects and presentations
  • Create hotlists for students to use when searching and researching

Purposeful Connections

Make sure you know your purpose no matter how you decide to use technology in your classroom.  Whether it involves the Internet, PowerPoint, Word or any other available technology, we must remain purpose-driven to be effective.
