Technology is changing daily.  Sometimes it can be overwhelming to think that you need to learn and know it all.  There are some basic things that will help you be able to adapt and change with the technology and therefore teach yourself the new with what you already know about the "old".   • What is a CPU?
  • What is your "H" Drive?

Some Basics & Background Knowledge You Need to Know:

Hardware

  • PC's - keyboard, monitor, mouse, drives, CPU, etc.
  • Other computers - Macs, Laptops and Notebooks
  • Presentation Televisions - cords & connections
  • Digital Cameras - effects, equipment, getting the pictures, tips
  • Scanners - graphics, text, saving, using it
  • Boxlight Projectors - connections, cords, and costly bulbs
  • Printer - paper, ink, troubleshooting, settings, problems

Software

  • Microsoft Office - Several great tools for creating documents, organizing data, preparing presentations, etc. (great for teacher and student use!)
  • Word - A great tool for creating documents from general word processing, to designing posters and fliers, to creating simple web pages.  Easy to use tools and several options!
  • PowerPoint - great presentation tool.  Create one from scratch or use a template/wizard and just plug in your information.  Great for parent nights, presenting new information, creating review games, displaying announcements, etc.  Also a great tool for student projects and presentations.
  • Photo Editor - a nice basic image editing tool to help with your presentations, documents and web pages!
  • Excel - a spreadsheet tool that is great for organizing and sorting data - great for student information, etc.
  • Access - a complex database tool - can be useful to sorting and storing data but tough to learn.
  • Print Artitst - another tool for creating all sorts of documents, banners, badges, etc.
  • Claris Works - a lower end productivity set, okay to use but not nearly as many options as Microsoft Office
  • Curriculum Related - see [C] for ideas on using software with the curriculum
  • CD Roms - some in the IMC and available in district - others for purchase or order
  • Downloading & Installing - any outside software must be approved by the IT department

Internet

  • Searching vs. Surfing - are you using it or is it using you?
  • Proper search techniques - words, topics, engines
  • Creating and using hotlists - giving your students a place to start and using time more wisely
  • Appropriate Use - what can and can't you do?
  • Documenting Research, Analyzing Sites - how to tell if sites are worth it and how to use them if they are
  • Browsers - differences, tips
  • Web Pages and Sites - creating your own for use on the Internet in the classroom and for communication
  • Projects - get involved and create your own
  • Publishing - guidelines and good ideas
