Kindergarten
- Use appropriate software with supervision
- Introduce the basic parts of the computer,
computer vocabulary, basic rules for computer use
and care

the IMC
- Introduce how to select books appropriately for
age and interest

First
- Use appropriate software with supervision
- Identify basic parts of the computer, use basic
computer vocabulary, and use basic rules for
computer use and care
- Introduce the function of special keyboard keys
such as shift, delete, and spacebar
- Identify the difference between fact and fiction
- Introduce nonfiction books for check out
- Introduce electronic resources for information.
- Introduce shelf location of easy fiction
- Review book care guidelines.
- Identify parts of a book.
- Recognize common library vocabulary
- Identify favorite authors and characters
- Introduce students to awards given for books and
award winning books

Second
- Apply rules for computer use and care
- Use software and computer with greater
independence
- Use and apply special keyboard keys such as

- Introduce and model citing title, author, and
copyright date
- Recognize that you get facts from nonfiction

- Continue to expose students to a variety of

Third

- Introduce saving, retrieving, and printing work on
the computer
- Introduce acceptable hand placement for the computer
keyboard
- Select and use both print and electronic resources
for gathering information
- Apply simple Internet navigation to find information
- Find books in the IMC using different call numbers
- Model and complete citations using author, title,
and copyright date
- Introduce taking notes rather than copying
(plagiarism).
- Identify different genres of literature and
encourage independent reading of a variety of genre
- Continue to reinforce awards for different books and
how to identify these books on the shelves
- Introduce the Dewey Decimal System as a way of
classifying nonfiction books
- Use the 800s and 398.2s to show the variety of
literature found in the Dewey Decimal classification
(i.e. fairy tales, tall tales, poetry)

Fourth
- Independently save, retrieve, and print work on the
computer
- Use online reference materials, Microsoft Office
Products (Word and PowerPoint), and appropriate computer
accessories (such as scanners and cameras) to aid in
completing projects.
- Independently select and use both print and
electronic resources for gathering information
- Reinforce keyboarding skills
- Continue to apply simple Internet navigation to find
information
- Use the electronic card catalog independently
- Build a simple bibliography page with citations
using author, title, and copyright date
- Continue modeling and using note taking techniques
rather than copying (plagiarism)
- Continue to develop an awareness of quality and

- Recognize nonfiction books are divided into
