At the end of each semester we have a classroom auction. The auction allows students to spend money they have received for behavior, classroom jobs, etc.

While I spend some money on auction items and others are purchased through Boxtop money, a majority of our auction items are provided via donations.

If you have items you could donate, or have the ability to get some donations, please send them in sometime in the next week or so. Items could include anything a 5th grader might enjoy ... games, books, art supplies, candy, giftcards.

Just a few quick notes about what we're busy with ...

In math we recently tested on Unit 4 (division) and will begin Unit 5 (fractions) next week.

In science we are just beginning chapter 9. So far we've read through the chapter once and done a couple summary/review activities. Next week we'll dive into the chapter with greater detail and prepare for a test right before break!

In language arts we've been doing spelling, reading and writing as usual. We've also been working through a read-aloud called The City of Ember ... the class seems to be really enjoying it and I'm confident they'll enjoy the sequel when we read it as well!

In social studies we've been working through a Web Quest on the Declaration of Independence. The entire activity can be found at http:// www.benmatthews.net/treasure. It's an exciting activity and is a nice introduction to our study of the American Revolution and the events of that period of American History. We'll be wrapping up that activity next week and be starting an Independence acitivity that will last until break.

My oldest daughter will be having surgery next Tuesday to have her tonsils removed. I'll be out Tuesday-Friday, but there will still be lots going on in the classroom! I'll be stopping by the classroom each evening to update things and check on their progress and I should be available via email ... but if you need to let someone know about an absence, appt., etc., please call the office or send a note.
