I mentioned on Parent Orientation / Curriculum Night
that I hope to take a little time this year to talk
about some life skills that go beyond math, science,
social studies and language arts. I hope when your
children leave the class they understand the
important of things like perseverance, integrity, hard
work, dedication, commitment – characteristics of
champions.
To help me do that I would like to take some time
periodically this year to share movies and movie
segments with the class. There are some great
things to be learned in movies like Hoosiers, The
Rookie, Miracle, Remember the Titans, Rudy, Glory
Road, The Greatest Game Ever Played, Akeelah and
the Bee and so on. Many of the movies are PG and
may include occasional scenes of violence or
vulgarity. Because of that, I want to get a feel for
how you feel about your child periodically viewing a
movie or scenes from a movie like those listed.
I use a resource called PREVIEW: Family Movie
Review (http://preview.
gospelcom.net/) to review
the movies (they get VERY specific on content), and
always watch the scenes or movies before I show
them so I can screen them for questionable content.
I also want you to know this won’t be a weekly time-
waster ... but I do believe periodically using media
like this can enrich the classroom experience.
Please reply to let me know your perspective, and
also to let me know of movies or scenes you think
might be beneficial!
