Lots of changes in 5M!
Dan moved to Bloomington with his family, so #13
was retired from our roster of Champions.
Libby moved here with her family from the state of
Washington and is the new #24.
And, next week Grace will be moving to Kentucky and
we'll be retiring #18.
Lots of changes! We wish Dan and Grace the best,
and welcome Libby!

What We're Learning
|
|
|
We've been busy with math, science, language arts
and social studies. Here's a quick update for you:
MATH:
We've been working with fractions, decimals and
percents. We've also been dealing with data
collection & fair and unfair games. We'll be taking a
test on Unit 6 in about 1 1/2 weeks.
SCIECE:
We just test on Chapter 10 ... the students did an
awesome job! We will be starting Chapter 11 next
week.
LANGUAGE ARTS:
We didn't take a spelling test this week because of
the short schedule, but we did practice as usual.
We've also been working on making books (more info
below) and last week all finished our first book called
When I Was Five .... We've also been reading
aloud from the third book in the City of Ember series -
- a prequel to The City of Ember called The
Prophet of Yonwood.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
We finished our unit on the New Nation and have
started a study of civics and American Government
called "We The People", which includes a textbook
and several activities and simulations...

Independence
|
|
|
The students recently received their graded
Independence Packets. The packets allowed us to
take an in-depth look at the War for Independence,
but they also allowed the students a chance to work
independently and to improve their ability to set
goals, work with deadlines, and give their best
effort. Overall I was very pleased wtih the results.
As we move toward the end of 5th grade, it becomes
more and more important for the students to learn to
be independent thinkers and workers. It also
becomes more and more important for them to be
able to advocate for themselves as people and
students ... these are skills we will be working on
throughout the remainder of the year.

On the Horizon ...
|
|
|
This time of year seems to get so busy ... between
the weather, ISATs and trying to get everything in
that we need to get to, time seems to fly. There are
a few things coming up though that you should be
aware of ...
- Feb. 9 > No School: School Improvement Day
- Feb. 12 > No School: Lincoln's Birthday
- Feb. 14 > Valentine's Day Party at 2:15
- Feb. 17 > PIECE Carnival
- Mar. 1 > Music Program
- Mar 12 > ISAT Testing Begins
|
|
ISAT Preparation
|
|
|
ISAT Testing begins March 12. Over the next few
weeks we will be doing some various "test prep"
activities to help us be ready. It will also be
important leading up to testing days that students
are healthy and rested ... they should get in the
habit now of eating well, sleeping well, and dressing
for the weather!

Young Authors
|
|
|
We've spent the past couple weeks talking about the
jobs of illustrators and authors and the process for
creating a book. All students created a book titled
When I Was Five ... and now each student is
creating a book on the topic of their choice. It can
be a picture book, poetry book, short story, chapter
book ... whatever their heart desires. The books are
a class assignment, but each student will also be
encouraged to submit their books for Young Authors -
- so books must be complete and turned in to me by
NEXT THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 15 at the end of the day.
