Simple Machine Project Guidelines
All of the following will help you complete this project and earn the grade you desire.
1. List your group member names and numbers below
2. Name the simple machine(s) your group is responsible for
3. Write a one paragraph description/definition of your machine(s) below
4. Draw a detailed and labeled diagram of your machine(s) that your model will be based on
5. List below the materials you will need in order to build your model as a group - include who will bring each item
6. Complete at least one of the "Activities" from the book dealing with your machine(s). List the page number, and a detailed summary of the experiment (hypothesis, procedure, results, observations. etc. below). Include any charts, graphs, diagrams, etc. necessary to show your results and complete the experiment/activity.
7. Write a 2-3 paragraph summary of your machine(s), including what it is, when it is used, its history, and any other important information, from the pages in your textbook. Be sure to list the page numbers where you found the information.
8. Prepare a 10 minute presentation with your group to share with the class what you learned about your machine(s) including your working model. You may be as creative as you want in the method of the presentation as long as it includes the following (use the space below to plan the presentation):
    • Name of the machine
    • Other names it is called
    • Its history
    • What it is used for
    • How it reduces the amount of work
    • How it is related to energy
    • Who invented it, if known
    • How it is used in today's world
    • Different variations of the machine(e)
    • Any other important information you find
    • The sources you used to find your information
    • A working model of your machine(s)

Your presentation and product will receive a group grade and you will receive an individual grade for your role in the group based on your attitude, effort, and participation. The following will be used to evaluate your product and presentation. The form on the next page will help determine the grades of individuals in your group.

To earn an A:

All of the items will be completed, show great effort, will include complete sentences, correct spelling and grammar and be essentially error-free. Writing will be concise but detailed.

The presentation will be between 9-12 minutes, will include at least 10 items from the list of 12 in guideline #8, and all group members will share equally, use good speaking voices, maintain good eye contact, and show evidence of being well-prepared.

The overall product, including the research, list of resources, completion of guideline packet, and the model itself will show evidence of a total team effort and preparedness by all members. The product will display a knowledge of the machine(s) by the group and their ability to apply that knowledge excellently. The model will work properly.

To earn a B:

All of the items will be completed, show very good effort, will include complete sentences, correct grammar and spelling, and be essentially error-free. Writing will be somewhat concise and detailed.

The presentation will be between 9-12 minutes, will include at least 9 items from the list of 12 in guideline #8, and all group members will share equally, use good speaking voices, maintain good eye contact, and show evidence of being well-prepared.

The overall product, including the research, list of resources, completion of guideline packet, and the model itself will show evidence of a total team effort and preparedness by all members. The product will display a knowledge of the machine(s) by the group and their ability to apply that knowledge excellently. The model will work properly.

To earn a C:

All of the items will be completed, show very good effort, will include complete sentences, correct grammar and spelling, and be essentially error-free.

The presentation will be less than 9 or more than 12 minutes long, will include at least 8 items from the list of 12 in guideline #8, and all group members will share equally, use good speaking voices, maintain good eye contact, and show evidence of being well-prepared.

The overall product, including the research, list of resources, completion of guideline packet, and the model itself will show evidence of a total team effort and preparedness by all members. The product will display a knowledge of the machine(s) by the group and their ability to apply that knowledge excellently. The model will not work properly, though it was built and created correctly using the knowledge of the machine(s).

Anything that does not meet these standards will result in a D or an F.
