all about me book
due: september 26, 2000 by 3:15
guidelines/requirements:
Your "All About Me" book must include the following items/sections:
1. three-ring binder
2. cover page (inside or outside of binder)
3. brief letter of introduction
4. timeline of life
5. acrostic poem with name, description of your name's meaning or why you were named that
6. maps and/or pictures of where you live (city, state, country, home, bedroom, etc.)
7. pictures and/or descriptions of your schools, teachers, and friends
8. pictures and/or info about your family, pets,. and growing up (family tree, etc.)
9. pictures and/or descriptions about your likes, dislikes and favorite things
10. descriptions of your hopes, your dreams, and your future
Your book may be, but does not need to be, typed.  It does need to be neatly done and show a lot of time and effort, however.  Your book should include as many pictures (photographs, hand-drawn, clipped from magazines, etc.) as possible.  Remember, this will be on display, so do a good job - take some pride in your work!

guidelines:
You must complete all of the following with your group:
1. Choose 6 of the 9 topics in the tic-tac-toe to discuss
2. Choose 2 of those 6 items to create or find visual aids for.
3. Turn in you research, presentation outline, and visual aids on the day you present
4. You may compare/contrast your two tribes or present them "separately"
5. Your presentation must be between 5 and 7 minutes long.
6. You may go above and beyond these guidelines - these are just the minimum requirements!

planet project
due october 6 OR october 9
We will work on this in class tuesday through thursday.  If you will be doing all the work at home, I need a note from home!  This will receive a "test/project" grade.
Choose one of the following, or get a different project pre-approved by Mr. Matthews:
1. a model (use your choice of materials - it may be no larger than a basketball and no smaller than a baseball and must look like your planet!)
2. create a book for your planet (include pictures and descriptions in your own words as well as a cover)
3. create a Power Point presentation or web page for your planet - you must have the knowledge and resources this time - we will all learn these together at a later date
4. create a food item that is completely edible that resembles your planet, such as a decorated round cake, large cookie, etc.

explorer project
due october 23, 2000
We will work on this in class tuesday through friday.  You may work on it at home as well.  This will receive a "test/project" grade.
You must choose and complete 3 of the following 9 activities for 1 explorer (choose from those on pages 110-157 in your book).  
1. create a detailed map of the world showing the routes your explorer took on their voyages
2. write a 3-5 page journal as if you were your explorer
3. conduct a 10 minutes interview "with your explorer"
4. write a 5 paragraph paper about your explorer
5. dress up as your explorer and give a 3-5 minute speech as that person
6. create a 6-10 slide presentation using Power Point or a similar program
7. create a set pf 3-5 postcards with pictures of places your explorer went and a "note" from them on the back.
8. create a puppet of your explorer and put on a puppet show for us.
9. create a 5 minute documentary film about the life of your explorer.

due dates range from nov. 27 to dec. 13 with all late work required by dec. 15 for credit - specific due dates for portions of the project can be found in the project packet itself

yorktown saltdough project :
I. Materials
: (* means you provide!)
  • Cardboard base (provided)
  • *Salt Dough, Playdough, or Modeling Clay
  • *Paint (if using saltdough)
  • Toothpicks (provided)
  • Labels (provided)
  • *Pencil, paper, scissors, etc. (everyday school supplies)

II. Instructions:
You will be completing a three-dimensional model of the Battle of Yorktown based on the diagram/picture on pages 266-267 of your textbook. You may use other sources as well to help supplement your knowledge of the battle and the layout.
You will be working with one or two partners to complete one model, but you will all be submitting your own written assignment, to be given later, that coincides with the topic and your project. The finished model must be turned in on or before Wednesday, February 7, 2001.
The finished model must meet all of the requirements listed below in order to receive a passing grade. The following rubric will be used to evaluate the projects:

III. Rubric:
To
receive an A: Your project must include all of the requirements listed below, be turned in on time, show excellent understanding of the battle of, and layout of, Yorktown, show neatness and excellent effort. There may be NO spelling errors on labels of anywhere within the project and the colors must be realistic.
To receive a B: Your project must include all of the requirements listed below, be turned in on time, show very good and thorough understanding of the battle of, and layout of, Yorktown, and shoe very good effort and neatness. There may be no more than 3 spelling errors anywhere within the project.
To receive a C: Your project will meet all of the requirements listed below, be turned in on time, show a good understanding of the battle of, and layout of, Yorktown, and show good effort and neatness. There may be no more than 5 spelling errors anywhere within the project.
To receive a D/F: Your project will not include all of the requirements listed below, OR it will not be turned in on time, OR it will show poor understanding of the battle of, and layout of, Yorktown, OR it will show a lack of effort and neatness. It will also receive a D/F if there are more than 5 spelling errors anywhere within the project!

IV: Requirements:

  • This assignment is due on or before Wednesday, February 7, 2001.
  • Your project must include land and water areas/forms located around the battle of Yorktown, including the Chesapeake Bay
  • Your project must include some sort of representation of French, British, and American soldiers
  • The French navy must be represented on the model as well
  • Your project must be completed using realistic colors
  • Your project must have a title as well as your names on it
  • Your project must include a key to correspond to your labels, etc.
  • The following must be represented and labeled:
  • French soldiers
  • British soldiers
  • American soldiers
  • French navy
  • Chesapeake Bay

Be creative in how you choose to represent these items, using color, symbols, flags, etc.! The more thorough and creative you are, the more powerful the overall impact of your model will be.
