How to Play Chess

Do you want to learn how to play chess?  This book will tell you all you need to know about chess and how to play it.  Let’s start with what you will need.  You will need a chess set.  In a basic chess set there are 36 pieces like in picture 1.  A chess set also includes a chess board like in picture 2.  Next you need to face the board so the white square is on the bottom right.  The letters should be facing you so you can read them.  Then whoever wants to be white puts their pieces on the rank (across the board) 1 and 2.  After that put the rooks (pieces that look like castles) on the corners.  The knights (horses) next to the rooks.  The King(piece with a crown) and the queen(other tall piece) in the middle on rank 1 or 8.  The white queen goes on the white space in the middle.  Next the pawns(short pieces) on rank 2 or 7.  The last two pieces are the bishops.  They go on the empty spaces in rank 1 or 8. Now that you set up your board, it is time to play.  White always goes first.  Each pawn can move two spaces on the first turn.  After the first turn the pawns can only move 1 space.  Pawns capture diagonal one space forward.  Pawns cannot jump other pieces.  Next is the rook.  It moves up, down, left or right.  It cannot jump other pieces.  After that we should learn about the knight.  The knight moves in an “L” shape in any direction.  Knights are the only pieces that can jump others.  Bishops move diagonal.  Bishops also capture diagonal.  Last bishops can’t jump pieces.  Next is the queen.  The queen moves up, down, left, right, or diagonal.  It also captures diagonal, up, down, left, or right.  The last piece is the king.  The king moves and captures one space in any direction.  If your king is in check you need to move it so it is not being threatened by another piece.  Checkmate is when the king is in check and cannot move anywhere to escape it.  The person that is attacking the king wins.  Stalemate is when the king is not in check and cannot move anywhere.  I hope you have a very fun time playing chess.  If you have any questions please ask them to Kyle.

The Porcupine

The porcupine is a fascinating animal.  It lives in a unique habitat, has adapted many survival skills, and has other interesting qualities.

The porcupine lives in a unique habitat.  It is found in North America in warm climates.  They are found in forests and scrubland.

The porcupine has many adaptations that help it survive.  The porcupine has long and very strong quills.  The porcupine has poor eye sight so they rely on their good sense of smell.  It also has sharp claws that help it climb trees.

There are other neat facts that make the porcupine a special animal.  Did you know that a baby porcupine is called a porcupette?  It also has sharp teeth.  A porcupine’s quills are made of hardened hair.

The porcupine is quite an animal.  Its habitat and adaptations make it unique.  Can you believe that a porcupine has over 30,000 quills?

My Family

My family has three other people.  My sister Alyssa is five years old.  My mom and my dad are also part of my family.  I have a fish named Rainbow.  My sister has a fish names Apple.  We also have a dog named Chase.  That is our family!

Sometimes we play games together.  We like to play board games.  Other times we play hide-and-seek or tag.  We also like to make up games like tag-and-seek.  It is just like hide-and-seek only if they find you, you turn into tag mode.  It is a fun game.  My dad and I like to play chess.  My sister is learning to play chess too!  My family and I like to play games.  We also like playing with our pet dog Chase.  He is fun to play with because we like to chase him around and then pet him.

Our family is very special because my mom is from Japan and my dad is from the U.S.A.  We have traveled to Japan together two times.  As you can see, my family is very special to me!
