High Frequency Words

High Frequency Word Activities:

· Write words currently introduced on a card and place them around your child’s bedroom and play this game just before they go to bed…

· “Flashlight, flashlight, show our words with your light.” (all the  room lights are off)

· Using a flashlight twirl it around on the ceiling saying:

· “Word Wall, Word Wall, What word is this?”

· (point the flashlight on a word)

· Say it and spell it...children love it!

· Make a Bingo card with currently used words.

· Cheer a word…for “it” ...

Give me an “i”!    “i”!  Give me a “t”!  “t”!

What’s that spell? It!  What’s that spell? ItWhat’s that spell?  It! !

· Make additional sets to play the “Memory Game”.

· ‘Box’ words following the letter shapes with a highlighter.

The following is a list of high frequency (sight words) we will be learning in kindergarten.  These words will be introduced one word at a time.  You may refer to this website for the most recently introduced words.  Those words introduced and ‘graduated’ on the Word Wall will be highlighted in yellow.

As eighty percent of the class or more gains mastery of a word it is then ‘graduated’ to the Word Wall (graduation ceremony included!).   Use the cards on the ring sent home to review words already introduced.  In order to review only those words your child is familiar with you may want to highlight words introduced to differentiate from those that have not yet been introduced.  As children differ in ability levels...feel free to work ahead if your child is secure with words introduced.

When using the cards make this a quick review.  Your goal should be enjoyment of literature versus a heavy dose of rote drill.  Note activity ideas below. Color  and number words will be introduced throughout the school year.
