Rules and Regulations

Required Uniform

The uniform for all students in P.E. classes consists of one pair of black shorts, a grey shirt (no other shirt is to be worn underneath), gym socks, and gym shoes.  You are required to mark the back of your shirt with your last name.  It is advisable to mark your shorts and shoes with your name as well.

If you want to wear a sweatshirt and/or sweat pants when we go outside, you may carry them into the gym at the beginning of class.  After roll is taken, you may put your sweat clothes on.  Blue jeans and jackets are not considered sweat clothes.  We go outside the 1st and 4th quarter when the temperature is 40 degrees and above.  Be prepared!

You are required to dress in a proper P.E. uniform each day.  This includes days you many not feel well, whether you have a parent or medical note, and will not participate.  In order to receive credit for that day, you must dress in your uniform.  An exception to this will be allowed if the circumstances make it difficult for you to dress.

Policy for Dress Cuts

You will receive a dress cut if you do not have your P.E. clothes.  In this case you are still required to dress by borrowing clothes from the P.E. department.

1. The first and second time a person borrows clothes during a quarter, they lose a dress point for the day.

2. The third time a person borrows clothes during the same quarter, they will lose a point for the day and a parent call is made along with a detention issued.

3. The fourth and fifth time a person borrows clothes during the same quarter, the student will lose a point for the day, and be referred to the associate principal and will be assigned a Saturday supervised study (Saturday detention).

4. If the student borrows clothes more than five times in a quarter, the office will enforce further consequences.

Lockers

A locker will be assigned to you for the purpose of storing your P.E. clothes while you are in class.  Each student will have his or her own P.E. locker.  Do not share lockers with another student.  Your locker must be locked with a combination lock.  Do not show or give your combination to anyone.  You must keep your locker and equipment secured at all times.  Locker checks will be conducted as needed.  Respect for the facility and for the property of others is essential.  You will be held responsible for the willful damage or destruction of personal or school property.

Excuses from P.E. Activities

Temporary excuses may be obtained by bringing your P.E. teacher a note from your parents.  We will only allow ONE parent note per quarter. A parent note will only excuse you from TWO DAYS of participation.  If you are on a parent or medical note, you will be asked to walk or do what you can.  If you are out on a medical note for more than a week, you will be assigned to the IMC for study hall until you can return to P.E.

Absences

When you are absent, you do not receive your points for that day.  If you would like to make up those points, you can run any day before school.  See your P.E. teacher to make these arrangements.  Failure to make up missed days (excused, unexcused, emergencies, athletics, etc.) will affect your grade.

Health and Safety Rules

1. Wash your P.E. clothes regularly.  We recommend you take them home every Friday to be washed and bring them back on Monday.

2. Keep deodorant in your locker and use it every day.

3. No running or horse play will be allowed coming into or going out of the gym, in the locker room, or coming into or going out of the locker room.  When you enter the gym at the beginning of the hour and when dismissed to the gym after dressing in your P.E. clothes, go directly to your squad and sit down.  Failure to be in your squad on time at the beginning of class and/or when dismissed from dressing will result in a tardy.

4. No food or gum is to be in the locker room, gym, or class.

5. Use equipment only if a teacher is present and with permission.

6. Do not leave the gym, locker room, or class area without permission.

7. Report all injuries to your P.E. teacher immediately.

8. Make sure your lockers are always locked.

Care of Equipment

Use equipment only when a teacher is present and with permission.  If you misuse an item and break it, you are required to pay for it.  Do not touch the badminton or volleyball nets, net standards, basketball goals or nets, or the dividing nets between activity areas.  Please do not hit or kick the dividing nets between areas, or try to go under or hold on to them as they are going up or down.

Start of Class

You need to be in your assigned squad and sitting down by the time class starts.  Failure to do so will result in a tardy.  After attendance, you will be sent to the locker room to change.  You need to change as quickly as possible (within 3-4 minutes) and report directly back to your squad.  Failure to do so will result in a tardy.

End of Class

You will have approximately 5-7 minutes to change at the end of class.  When you are changed, you need to sit in front of your locker and wait to be dismissed.

Physical Fitness Testing

Testing will be done in the fall and again in the spring.  The test is sponsored by the American Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance.  This test gives you a good idea of your physical condition compared to others your age throughout the U.S.  Individuals scoring 85% or above in each category will receive the Presidential Award.

Fitness Days

Each individual is expected to do their individual best in order to reach their maximum fitness level.  The following rules are implemented:

1. Do your individual best, not the same as a group of friends.  If you can run faster or compete better than something with you, you are expected to pick up the pace.

2. Your pace must be acceptable to your teacher.  Shuffling/sliding your feet or walking when expected to run is unacceptable.

3. Your heart rate should exceed an average of 140-150 beats per minute.

4. Students with asthma are responsible for having their inhalers and using them prior to activity

5. Students are expected to have their shoe laces tied for safety.
