Course Description

This is a comprehensive introduction of health principles designed for the promotion of healthy life-choices and illness prevention.

Course Goal/Rationale

Students will be able to understand the principles of health promotion and the prevention and treatment of illness and injury.  Students will understand human body systems and factors that influence growth and development.  Students will also learn to promote and enhance health and well-being through the use of effective communication and decision-making skills.

Duration

Six week rotation within the Physical Education program.

Grading Scale

A = 90-100, B = 80-89, C = 70-79, D = 60-69, F = 59 and below

Coursework Policy

All assignments and projects are due on time.   If you have a specific concern that keeps you from turning your work in on time, speak to me as soon as possible. 

Assignments

1. Nutrition and Fitness Project – 30 points

2. Debate Project – 30 points

3. Tic Tac Toe Project – 30 points

4. Portfolio - 2 random binder checks – 10 points

5. Participation - 10 points

Total Possible – 110 points

Extra Credit

I DO NOT give extra credit.  If you do all your work successfully and try your best in class, I guarantee you will pass my class.  Anything better than passing is up to how hard you are willing to work.

Cheating Policy

Any student caught cheating will receive a zero on the coursework involved and will be turned in to the office.

Required Materials

Writing utensil, paper, and folder must be brought to every class.

Rules

1. Show respect for all teachers and students.

2. Do not talk out of turn and do not interrupt others.

3. Act responsibly at all times.

4. Always use common sense.

Show up for class everyday, do your work, and show respect for yourself, your peers, and your teachers and you will be successful!

Students will learn to describe the structure and functions of body systems, disorders, and how they inter-relate.

2. Anorexia and Bulimia

II. SOCIAL ISSUES     

Students will be introduced to a variety of social issues that teens encounter.

A. Conflict Resolution

B. Suicide

C. Child Abuse

D. Depression

E. Pregnancy Consequences

III. DRUG AWARENESS

Students will gain an understanding and knowledge of drug related behaviors on physical, mental, and social well-being.
