We
Didn't Start the Fire!
|
Listen to Billy Joel's song "We Didn't Start the Fire." What a great song!! However, there are now 11 years unaccounted for (1990-2001). Much has happened in the last twelve years. You are going to write another verse to the song "We Didn't Start the Fire." What are the most important events, people and places? What are the reasons for your selections?
You are going to write an additional verse to the song "We Didn't Start the Fire." You will join together with two other students and begin to brainstorm possible events, people and places for your song. Ultimately, the group will decide on 15 items to complete their verse. The new verse will include those 15 items. In addition, students will write a one paragraph (of at least 100 words) justification for each choice in the song. (If there are three in the group, each person can be responsible for writing 5 justifications.)

Begin to brainstorm with your group members a list of events, people and places that have been significant in the last 12 years. Use resources such as newspapers, books, magazines, maps and the internet. When using the internet use the sites listed above first.
With your group, narrow your list to 15 items.
Using your selected items write the additional verse to the song "We Didn't Start the Fire." (If you need to listen to the song again, ask the teacher.)
Finally, divide the list of items in your song among group members (five per member). Each student will write a paragraph (of at least 100 words) that justifies the reason why this event, person, or place was selected for the song.
Ultimately, groups members will be asked to perform their additional verse to the song and turn in their 15 justificationn paragraphs.
The new verse to the song and performance:
There will be 15 items.
All items will be spelled correctly.
The verse should rhythmically become a part of the song.
The justification paragraphs:
The paragraphs will be at least 100 words each.
Proper conventions will be used in the paragraph.
The paragraph will contain a topic and a concluding sentence.
The paragraph will contain details about the event, person or place selected for the song.
There is never any less history, but there is always more. In ten years we will be back to add another verse to "We didn't start the fire." We did not start the fire, but we have certainly kept the flames burning.
