It is the CAC’s mission to represent the Unit 5 community by fostering district-wide dialogue and examining topics of interest.

Created by the Unit 5 Board of Education as a means of encouraging public participation in educational planning, the Citizens Advisory Council (CAC) serves as an invaluable facet of the Unit 5 community. The CAC is composed of over 65 active members who collectively function as a liaison between the district and its community. By acting in a responsive and proactive manner, CAC members help to shape the educational future of Unit 5 students.

At least five general membership meetings of the CAC are held throughout the school year, with smaller group and committee meetings occurring as needed. Sub-committees meet regularly to help define and articulate community concerns and desires regarding education by preparing and presenting advisory reports to the Board. At least two Board members and the Superintendent or a designee attend each CAC meeting.

The CAC is composed of three parent representatives from each school attendance center, as well as up to nine at-large members who reside within the district, but do not have children attending Unit 5 schools. Members serve on the council for three years, with 1/3 of the CAC membership being selected each year. Application to the CAC is made at each attendance center (school), with the parent organization defining its own CAC representative selection process. At-large applications are submitted to the District Office in response to membership drive solicitation periods. After reviewing application forms and giving special consideration to obtaining a membership that: is committed to active involvement in CAC initiatives; possesses a variety of applicable skill sets; and is representative of Unit 5 communities; the CAC officers select at-large representatives.
