About the Author

Jerry Spinelli was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania.  As a child Jerry really didn't read that much but comics.   He became interested in becoming a writer when he was 16. His high school football team won a big game.  That same night he wrote a poem about it.  That poem got posted in the local newspaper.  That is when he said he wanted to be a writer.  At first he wrote adult books.   But no one wanted to read serious adult books about "important things".  So, one summer morning he got an idea for his first kid's book.  Jerry opened his fridge to get some chicken bones he had left there the night before intended for his work lunch that day.  But when he saw them he saw only 5 chicken bones.  That afternoon on his lunch break he wrote this:

"One by one my step father took  the chicken bones out of the bag and laid them on the kitchen table.  He laid them down real neat.  In a row.  Five of them.  Two leg bones, two wing bones , one thigh bone."  Little did he know he was writing his fifth novel.  Then he published Space Station 7th grade.  From that day on he wrote children's books.  His writing is heavily influenced by his childhood and experiences that he went through.
