Behavior Expectations

PBIS

What is PBIS? PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support. The staff at Oakdale Elementary School implemented this program at the beginning of the 2004-2005 school year. This is a behavior program designed to better engage our learners and minimize distractions throughout the school day.

One of the important aspects of this program is having consistent expectations throughout the building. There are four expectations Oakdale students are to follow.

1. Be Respectful

2. Be Responsible

3. Be Here, Be Ready

4. Be Safe

When any staff member sees a student exhibiting one of the four expectations, that student has a chance to earn a Panther Paw! A Panther Paw is a slip of paper that students write their name on and turn in for a drawing at the end of the week. Each classroom draws a Panther Paw on Friday and that student receives a reward from Mrs. Bennington. It is one more way to recognize good behavior and to tell Oakdale students how great they are!!

Did you know that our school’s four expectations: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Here and Be Ready, and Be Safe, are more than just a catchy slogan? The words are changing the face of education in the United States .

Our school, as well as 11 others in Unit 5, participates in Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). PBIS is a national movement. It is a proactive systems approach for creating and maintaining safe and effective learning environments in schools. In Illinois , PBIS focuses on data-based decision-making around discipline and academics at school, district, regional and state levels, integrating related school improvement initiatives and structures. Currently, more than 535 of the State’s 4,000 school buildings participate in PBIS.

PBIS is also a federally funded research project. The things we do that are a part of PBIS are monitored by the state of Illinois, and ultimately are sent to the University of Oregon, who is charged by the U.S. Department of Education to monitor the changes made in school climate. Data from our building, our district and our state is combined with the data from schools in 26 other states to influence Federal education policy. Because of this, we have access to some of the cutting edge research from leading authorities in the Nation. If you would like to see some of this research, log on to www.pbis.org.
