Étienne Brulé, a French explorer, visited what is now Michigan.

1668

Detroit, Michigan's largest city, was founded and named Fort Pontchartrain by the French colonist Antoine Cadillac.

1837

Became the 26th state on January 26th. Congress gave Michigan the entire upper peninsula.

1899

Ransom E. Olds founded first automobile factory in Detroit.

1964

Michigan's new constitution went into effect.
