In 8,000 B.C. Indians came to the region now known as North Dakota. Then in 400 B.C., the Woodland Indians settled in eastern North Dakota. The Mandan Indians settle along the Missouri River in 1,000 A.D. In 1738, the first European came to North Dakota. He was a French-Canadian Fur trader named Pierre de La Verendrye. Also, in 1804 Lewis and Clark stopped in North Dakota and built Fort Mandan. Then, in 1861, North Dakota territory is established. On November 2, 1889, North Dakota became a state. In 1946, construction of Garrison Dam began. And , in 1957, an air-force base was built in Minot. |

Lawerence Welk (1903-1992) He was born in Stasburg.
He formed a band in the 1920's and
became famous as the host and bandleader of "The Lawerence Welk
Show." James Buchli (1945-) In 1985 he was a flight engineer for the space shuttle Discovery. In that same year he was part of the crew for the Challenger. He flew again in Discovery in 1989. He was born in Fargo. Roger Maris (1934-1985) He was a baseball player for the New York Yankees, and was American League's Most Valuable Player in 1960 and 1961. By hitting his 61st home run in 1961 he broke the record for the most home runs in one season until Mark Maguire hit 70. Maris grew up in Fargo. |
