Congress coined the name Indiana in 1800,when Indiana Territory was carved out of the northwest territory. The name, which means "the Land of the Indians" was retained when Indiana was admitted to the union as the nineteenth state on December 11,1816. In 1820, a site near the geographic center of the state was chosen as the future capitol, and the city of Indianapolis was established. By the mid 1800's, Indianapolis was a bustling city. |
