Walk Through History Speech

The following items need to be included in your speech that will be given the day of the cemetery walk.  Speeches need to be memorized with expression.  Practice makes perfect!

·       Your speech needs to be written in the 1st person.  “I am called Wild Bill although my real name is….”

·       Tell us when you were born.

·       Tell us about your family and where you lived in Illinois.

·       Explain why you are famous and still studied today.

·       What are at least two interesting things about you?

·       When, where and how did you die?

·       Where could the listener go to find out more about your life?  Encyclopedia? Internet? Library?

The talk needs to be in “time order”.  For instance, the last thing I should know is where you died.

Add personality to your speech!  Similes and metaphors help that out!

Have fun becoming your famous Illinois person!

 Tombstones

1. It must be sturdy enough to stand alone in the wind and in the hall before the cemetery walk. (Hint, one that was very sturdy was made from Styrofoam and glued to a wooden base.)

2. It needs to be at least two feet tall.

3. There are no restrictions on what you use. Styrofoam, cardboard, wood, paints, etc.

4. Neatness will be part of the grade. Your child should show that effort was put into it.

5. Tombstones need to have full names of the famous person, date of birth and date of death.

6. Must have a one or two line epitaph.

7. Child's name and room code on back.

8. Due. After the Holidays.

Choices for walk through history.

This is a small sample of names your child might want to research for our cemetery walk.  Please go over it with your child and help him/her make a wise choice that will actually connect him to things of interest.  Some are more difficult to research than others.  We would like to reserve the right to limit certain choices.  For instance, Abe Lincoln and Jane Addams will be studied later in the year as complete units so we prefer that some children choose people who will stretch their knowledge a bit more.

As you can easily see, women were not as well known as men in our nations pasts.  Girls may research a male and dress as one or as his wife if married.
