Frequently Asked Questions What time does school dismiss? School dismisses at 3:15. Our class will dismiss between 3:00-3:05 to avoid confusion when the rest of the school lets out. What if my child is to go home a different way? If your child is to go home a different way than usual, please send a note that morning. If plans change during the day and you did not send a note, please send me an e-mail or call the office. What day is Library? Our class will have library on Tuesdays this year. Your child may return his/her book at any time during the week before our library day. What can I do at home to help my child academically? Read, read, read! Be sure to read to your child each night. Have your child read to you as well. Be sure to listen to them read the "take home" books that they read at school. Please have a special place at home to keep these so they can read them again and again. You can also practice letters and sounds at home. Use your "key ring" to review letters and sounds. If your child is familiar with the letters and sounds, take them off the ring and use them to create words. Can I come eat lunch with my child? Yes! We love to have lunch visitors! However, please allow a few weeks for the kindergartners to become accustomed to the lunch routine before joining us. We eat lunch from 11:25-11:50 each day. You may bring a lunch or purchase an adult hot lunch. If you will be eating hot lunch, please let me or the office know by 8:30 that morning. Please meet us at the lunchroom doors at 11:20! How can I volunteer? We love to have all kinds of volunteers in kindergarten! We use volunteers every day during our literacy block, as well as for special events and projects. We also love to have volunteers come in to read and work with small groups of students, be our mystery readers, and accompany us on field trips. We also have many opportunities for parents to help with paperwork at home if you are not able to volunteer in the classroom. Please let me know if you are interested in helping out! We are so grateful for all of your time!! When is show and tell? The kindergartners take turns taking home the "show and tell" bag. The "show and tell" bag has directions in it asking you to help your child choose an item. Other students will ask questions about the item in a "20 Questions" format. When is the first report card? Unit 5 elementary schools operate on a trimester system. Your kindergartner will bring home his/her first report card on November 21.
What are good snacks to bring in? Our class eats only fruits and vegetables for snack! When sending your child's snack each day, please keep in mind that fruit cups are often extremely messy, and I ask that you do not send in any dips, sauces, etc... Snack ideas include (but are not limited to): apple slices, carrot sticks, applesauce cups, raisins, cherry tomatoes, grapes, watermelon cubes, raspberries, blueberries, banana, etc...
Does my child need to leave tennis shoes at school? Your child needs tennis shoes each day but does not need to leave a separate pair at school. It is easiest if your child wears them to school each day. If they cannot wear their tennis shoes (bad weather etc.) they need to bring a pair with them or use a pair that they have left at school previously. Please be sure all shoes left are labeled. **If your child cannot tie and will be changing his/her shoes at school, Velcro shoes are preferred!
