3/01 Attention Key Club Members:
We will meet tomorrow (Wednesday) at 6:40am and 2:40pm in the Senior Cafeteria. Please plan to attend one of the meetings, as we have several important activities to discuss including Elementary school volunteering, Sweet Senior Success and board member opportunities for next year.  See you there!
2/18 Attention all seniors: time is running out to paint your ceiling tile for the senior cafeteria. There are three final days to scheduled for you to come and leave your mark. Plan to come to artroom #40 on either Sunday February 21, 2010 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, Tuesday February 23, 2010 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm or Thursday March 4, 2010 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. 2/08 Surprise a special someone with a Valentine’s Day Cookie!  Stop by the Key Club table in the Atrium during all lunches, Monday February 8th through Thursday, February 11th and order a delicious cookie from Denny’s Doughnuts for only $1.00! The cookie, along with your personal message on a Valentine’s card, will be delivered during 8th hour on Friday, February 12th.

2/04 Congratulations to NCHS Key Club members in winning the award for Top Bell Ringing among Youth Service Clubs for the Salvation Army.  Key Club members raised $1855 this holiday season (almost double last year’s total) and have retained the travelling trophy two years in a row! Way to go Key Club!
1/25  Pack the Place Pink!  Join us on Thursday, January 28, at 7:30 pm for NCHS Girls Basketball vs. Bloomington High School. Proceeds from Thursday’s game will benefit breast cancer research and awareness. Pink T-shirts will be sold for $5.00 during the lunch hours and at the game. Thanks for your support!
1/25 Attention Parents and Students:
The Illinois Secretary of State (ISOS) has received notification from the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) that the National Computer Center (NCC) will shutdown for extensive electrical work during three holiday weekends in 2010 (Saturday at 12:01 a.m. until 5:00 a.m. Monday of the holiday). When the NCC is shutdown, the ISOS will not have access to the Social Security On-Line Verification (SSOLV) system. Shutdowns are scheduled for the following weekends: more....
1/21 The 28th annual Straight A program is designed to reward students who have achieved and A or A- average in academic subjects during any grading period of the fall semester. Come to the guidance office to get info on how to receive two complimentary tickets to selected Illinois State men's or women's basketball games as well as mention in The Pantagraph's April Straight A promotion featuring the Straight A participants. Come to Guidance by Jan. 28th and the deadline is Jan. 29th.

1/19 Normal Community High School parents/guardians who use Skyward Family Access have the option to receive email notification when their student's meal account balance is below $5.00. To receive the low-balance email, log into Skyward Family Access., Under the General Information tab, click E-mail Notification and check the box to receive the email. The parent/guardian that is listed as the head of household will receive the email notice. If a parent/guardian needs to provide an email address or address change, send the information to Mrs. Trickett at trickeje@unit5.org

1/19 Our next meeting will be Wednesday, January 27th.
We will meet in the Senior Cafeteria for the morning meeting at 6:40am and in the main cafeteria for the afternoon meeting at 2:40pm. We have lots to discuss (Valentine’s Day fundraiser, District Convention in April and a new service opportunity tutoring younger students) so please plan to join us. 1/12 Financial Aid Night will be held on Monday, January 25th at 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium. Information will be shared on how to apply and qualify for college scholarships, grants, loans, etc. If you have a junior or senior student at NCHS, please plan to attend.
1/11 Monical’s Pizza Community Day to help Iron Pride!! Tuesday, January 12th Enjoy a night of no dishes, no cooking, great pizza and help out Iron Pride Parent Organization all at the same time. All you need to do is print of the flier from the Monicals Website  or pick up the Monical’s Pizza Community Day flier in the Main Office. Present the flier when you dine-in or pick up your pizza. 20% of all orders will come back to Iron Pride! All of Iron Pride’s funds go to teams, organizations, and classes at NCHS.
1/04 Intramural indoor soccer is right around the corner! Team signup forms will be available on the NCHS intramural indoor soccer website on Tuesday, January 5. NCHS students who are interested in participating can access this link to IIS website. Signup begins on Thursday, January 7. There is a limited amount of space for teams so please be prepared. Signup forms should be returned to Mr. Jelinek, beginning Thursday, January 7. Games begin Monday, January 11. If you have any questions, please see Mr. Jelinek or Mr. Chapman.
1/04 Second semester will begin on Tuesday, January 5th, 2010.  All students are to meet 7:15 am in the following locations to pick up their schedule.

12/09 The new Illinois text messaging law goes into effect on January 1, 2010. According to the new law:
"A person may not operate a motor vehicle on a roadway while using an electronic communication device to compose, send, or read an electronic message." On January 1, 2010, it will be illegal (in the state of Illinois) to: send or read a text message while your car is in traffic; send or read an email message while your car is in traffic; use a cell phone in a SCHOOL or CONSTRUCTION zone without the use of a hands-free device. 12/09 This Friday, December 11th, come support the NCHS Student Council by attending a bookfair at the Barnes and Noble in Bloomington. Activities such as a performance by Years to Come, have some holiday presents gift wrapped or see our own Sam Mangialardi perform a magic show and create balloon animals from 630-8pm. A Percentage of your purchase at the store or the cafe will be donated to the student council. So come enjoy some great music and activities and do some holiday shopping to support student council!! 12/07 Toys for Tots
Bring a new, unwrapped toy to homeroom the week of December 7th ~ 11th and your homeroom might win a Pizza Party to start finals week! Key Club members will be stopping by homerooms and collecting and tallying the toys. This year we are particularly focusing on toys for kids 11-16 years old so think about what you or your younger siblings would like to see under the Christmas tree. The homeroom bringing in the most toys will win a Pizza Party on Tuesday, December 15th.
12/04 Nelson's Catered Chicken is Back!! The Boy's and Girl's Basketball teams are working to raise money for their programs. They are sponsoring a Drive-Thru Chicken Dinner at NCHS on Monday night, January 25th . It is so easy and so good. Dinner consists of a HALF rotisserie chicken with mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, bread, butter, AND a brownie all for only $8 per meal. Purchase your tickets from any basketball player or in the Athletic Office. The meals can be picked up at NCHS on 1/25 between 3:00 and 7:00. They will be piping hot and you won't even have to get out of your car!!! Last day to purchase tickets from a basketball player is January 8th but tickets can be purchased through the Athletic Office through Wednesday, January 20th. Don't miss out - get your tickets today!
12/02 NCHS “Cooking with Iron” Cookbooks are in. This is a fund raiser for the Junior Class to help pay for Prom. They have over 300 recipes and sell for $15 each. They will be sold at the next 2 home NCHS Girls Basketball and Boys Basketball games, December 3rd,4th,11th and 12th.  They will also be sold before the Band concert December 8th and the Orchestra Concert December 14th. 11/30 If you’re looking for ideas for gifts for your Ironmen don’t forget Spirit Wear! The NCHS Iron Pride Spirit Store will be open for Christmas shopping during the following evening hours: Thursday, Dec. 3, 6:45 – 8:15 pm; Friday, Dec. 4, 6:45 – 8:15 pm; Tuesday, Dec. 8, 5:30 – 6:45 pm; Friday, Dec. 11, 6:45 – 8:15 pm and Saturday, Dec. 12, 2:00-3:30 pm.
11/23 NEW TRANSPORTATION PHONE NUMBER: 557-4BUS (4287)
In an effort to streamline calls and provide a timely response regarding transportation issues, Unit 5 has implemented a Transportation Call Center. The Call Center was created to centralize calls to the transportation department and to route them to the appropriate individuals to handle each specific concern.
The hours of the Call Center will be Monday – Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Calls that are made before 6:30 a.m., after 4:30 p.m. or on weekends may be left in a voicemail box that will be checked at 6:30 a.m. the next work day. The goal is to provide a timely response to each inquiry or concern and to be sure that a resolution has been reached.

11/20 Beyond the Books: If you are looking for a meaningful holiday gift for an area educator, Beyond the Books has an option for you. Beyond the Books Educational Foundation is a mission to fund innovative enrichment programs for the students of Unit 5 and District 87 public schools.

This year Beyond the Books invites you to send a donation in honor of any Unit 5 educator. Your donation will place the educator’s name on the BTB Foundation’s Honor Roll. A certificate will then be sent to your home for your student to give to his or her teacher for the Holidays. Donations are channeled into grants for classroom projects.

11/20 Attention Parents and Guardians: The Report Card feature on Skyward Family Access is available. You may now view your student’s second quarter progress report. To view the progress report, click on Report Cards located on the left side of your screen under General Information. Click on Progress Report. When asked to Open or Save, choose Open. The document will open in Microsoft Word. At that point you may print or save the document.
11/19 JUNIOR CLASS COOKBOOKS HAVE ARRIVED! Purchase yours for only $15 from 10:30-12:30 in the atrium on Monday and Tuesday (November 23rd and 24th ). More dates to follow after Thanksgiving Break…check back!
11/15 Winter Bowling sign-up is next Tuesday before school.  See Srta. Howell in room 206 to get a sign-up sheet.
11/10 Attention seniors! Your last opportunity to be photographed for the 2010 yearbook will be Monday December 7, 2009. Root Studios is the official photographer for the yearbook and will be at NCHS only on 12-7-09. If you have not been photographed by Root Studios, please stop in to the Multipurpose room 47 A between 6:45 am. and 3:15 pm. There is not a fee to be photographed. A fee only applies if you wish to order pictures. Please see Mrs. Kelly or Ms. Allen if you have questions.

10/28 Attention Key Club Members:
Stop by Room 248 and pick up a trick-or-treat for UNICEF collection box.
Trick or treat for cash on Halloween and return the box at our meeting on Wednesday, November 7th Be sure to write your name on the box and please convert all your change to bills or a check.  Your efforts will help children and families in Uruguay and will count as a Key Club activity.

10/26 Attention Spanish Club Members: Please see Srta. Howell in room 206 asap to pick up your pasta dinner tickets if you haven’t already received them; all members are required to sell two tickets. Our Día de los Muertos fiesta will be Thursday, October 29 in the senior cafeteria.

Congratulations to Spanish 5 and French 5 for winning this year’s AP Foreign Language Kickball Game. Despite a strong showing by German 5 (and in spite of what you may have heard to the contrary) Spanish and French were triumphant! All 4th year foreign language students should give serious consideration to taking AP next year, because not only can you potentially earn college credit, but you can also play kickball!

These cards will be sent to military service men and women who won’t be able to spend the holidays with their families this year. 10/26 Girls' Soccer players interested in playing winter indoor soccer with other NCHS players should attend a short meeting on Tuesday, October 27 in Room 16 at 2:35 p.m. If you cannot attend, please see Coach Chapman for information.
10/06 Many of the Unit 5 volunteer badges have arrived. If you have completed the online volunteer screening process and you have not received your volunteer badge, please call or email Sharla Brown-Ajayi to see if your badge is now available. Once a volunteer receives his or her badge it must be worn when volunteering in the building. Mrs. Brown-Ajayi can be reached at browns@unit5.org  or 309-728-5057.

Volunteers must have completed the mandatory screening for Unit 5 Schools. To schedule a time to complete your secure, on-line volunteer form, please call Mrs. Brown-Ajayi at 728-5057 to schedule a time. The form takes approximately five minutes to complete. You must complete the volunteer screening prior to this event and have your volunteer ID badge while you are volunteering in the school.

10/14 The Powder Puff game is scheduled to start at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, October 14th, 2009.  The bonfire will immediately follow the conclusion of the game and the Unit 5 teacher band will be performing.
10/05 If you would like to bring a date to the Homecoming dance who is not an NCHS student you must complete the Homecoming Date Request Form and turn it into the main office by Tuesday October 13th, 2009.

9/29 Sophomore Class Fundraiser with The Paul Mitchell School
$5 will be donated to the sophomore class board for every hairstyle done on the day of homecoming. Students must show proof of being associated with NCHS (i.e. student id, homecoming ticket). It might be good to mention this at the time of making the appointment.

9/23 Homecoming Bell Schedule for Friday, October 16th 2009
9/23 Homecoming week will be held on October 13th -17th.  If you would like to participate in the parade on Friday, October 16th you must download the Parade Regulation and Entry Forms and return them to Jennifer Coppersmith or Marissa Frietsch.

10/05 Join After Prom Committee for a tailgate before the Homecoming game on Friday, October 16th with Nelson’s Chicken Dinners. The meal includes ½ chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, roll and dessert. They will be served from 3:30- 6:30pm. Stay and tailgate or drive thru and take your dinner home. Tickets are $8.00 each and can be purchased in the counseling office, thru committee members (Kim Moore, Cathy Parsons, Carolyn Shulman, Deb McCubbins, Jane Han, Deb Everly, Susy Reh, Renee Martin, Susan LaBelle, and Lisa Osnowitz) E-mail dkam.moore@verizon.net  if you would like tickets or have questions.  Tickets will be sold unit October 6th.
10/08 Spanish Club will be meeting NEXT Thursday, October 15. In order to plan for meeting supplies, please stop by room 206 to sign up to purchase a Mayan Mask that we will paint at the meeting. Cost will be $4 to cover the price of supplies but as usual we will have plenty of goodies to eat and if you don’t want to paint a mask you can still meet nuevos amigos and hablar español.

9/10 Do you like to travel? Have you ever been to Europe? Do you want to spend nine fun filled days traveling through Spain and Portugal? If you answered SÍ to any of these questions, then you should consider traveling to Lisbon, Madrid, and Barcelona with Srta. Howell next summer. You do not need to be currently enrolled in a Spanish class. If you are worried about the cost of such an extravagant trip, we can help you fundraise to lower the price. See Srta. Howell or send an email for more information. The registration deadline is November 1st.

9/09 Attention freshmen, sophomores, and juniors: picture retake day will be Wednesday September 30, 2009. HR Imaging will be in the multi-purpose room from 6:45 am until 3:15 pm to take pictures. Order forms are available in the main office now.  Please be advised that the yearbook staff will use this photo in the 2010 addition of the Reverie. A photo package is not required to be in the yearbook. Students can be photographed on 9-30-09 at no charge and be included in the yearbook. - The Reverie Staff

8/26 Are you interested in the Spanish Language and Hispanic Culture? Do you want to meet new amigos? ¿Te gusta comer? If so, then Spanish Club might be the right club for you. You do not have to be currently enrolled in a Spanish class to join. Find out what we’re all about at our first informational meeting on Thursday, September 3 at 2:45 in the Multi-purpose room. If you are currently participating in a fall sport but would like to join later in the year, see Srta. Howell in room 206.

8/24 TEACHERS and JUNIOR CLASS: We need 400 recipes in 4 days! Forms can be picked up in the main office or see Mrs. Hawkins for more information. Turn them in to the basket in the main office---please include your name! This is our own NCHS cookbook and fundraiser for prom!
8/20 NCHS IRONMEN!! Come to the Blacklight/Back-to-School Dance on September 11, 2009 after our first home football dance. The dance ends promptly at 10:30. The cost is $4. PLEASE BRING YOUR SCHOOL ID!!! There will be a DJ and lots of good dance moves.
8/20 WMBD 31 News/Sports has selected the Normal Community HS vs. Bloomington HS football game on September 4th to be the the Week Two "High School Game Day" match-up.  Fans of each school can go to the website, www.ciproud.com and vote for their respective school.  Look for updates on just who's winning the Spirit Poll in WMBD 31 newscasts throughout the week.  The school with the most on-line votes will be named the "Spirit Poll" winner on Friday.
