Column Addition Method

This method can be used for adding any addition problems with 2 or more digit numbers, one column (place value) at a time.

Use the controls below to view the tutorial, practice sets and answers are found on the left, and advance to the next method by using the navigational arrow on the bottom right.

  1. Draw Lines to separate the 1's, 10's, and 100's places.
  2. Add the numbers in each column (place value)
  3. If you have 2 digits in the 1's place, trade 10 ones for 1 ten.
  4. If you have 2 digits in the 10's place, trade 10 tens for 1 hundred.
