Objective: 
The ability to write is essential to any person’s effective communications.  Clear writing is critical to employment and production in today’s world.

Course Description: 
The Applied Communications class is a nine-week course focusing on writing to communicate.  It is designed to help students improve specific writing skills in order to develop a well-organized persuasive essay and expository presentation.  In addition, students will identify and understand basic technology skills necessary to produce a coherent, integrated piece of writing through the use of Microsoft Word 2003, Power Point 2003, and the Internet.

Course Outline:  (Tentative )
 

Week 1 Introduction, expectations, and acceptable computer usage procedures.
Week 2 & 3  Review Microsoft Word
 Review correct grammar, punctuation, capitalization, confusing words, sentence variety, word choice, and sentence structure
Week 4 & 5 Review Writing Toolbox (Narrative, Persuasive, and Expository writing)
Week 6 & 7 Internet Research - World Book Online
Persuasive Essay Skills
Editing and Revision  
Week 8  PowerPoint Guidelines
Creation & Presentations of Expository Power Point
Week 9 Writing a Personal Business Letter
Wrap Up, Review

Class Expectations & Late Work:

Students will be expected to turn in all class assignments.  An effort will be made to provide students the opportunity to complete all assignments in class each day.  It is in the best interest of the students to use the time available to avoid having homework.
