Our Goals and Objectives
The Unit 5 Media Services Department provides
instructional media center services to all staff and students in every
school in Unit 5. Media specialists are reading and technology leaders in
their schools. They provide bibliographic and technology instruction,
reference services, and collection development, and their role is to
promote information literacy, ensuring that students and staff are
effective users of ideas and information.
Kindergarten:
Goal 1: To
integrate the use of technology with adopted McLean County Unit District

Students will read for recreation and
appreciate literature.
Students will:
- Become confident and self-motivated readers
- Identify genres of literature
- Select both fiction and nonfiction materials for
recreational reading by browsing
- Attentively listen as literature is read aloud
- Learn about new books through booktalks,
displays, etc.
- Participate in book fairs and promotional reading
activities
- Become familiar with popular young adult authors
Students will effectively use technology
across the curriculum on a regular basis.
Students will complete the following tasks
with confidence:
- Login to Unit5 network using their proper
username and password and logout when finished
- Launch and exit applications
- Consistently save documents or files to their
folder on the network drive for later retrieval
- Move images, text, and data between software
applications
- Insert clip art or images into documents
- Scan documents/images
- Navigate the web (following links, using buttons,
etc.)
- Create a PowerPoint presentation or ClarisWorks
slide show
- Become proficient of using a variety of other
software applications
Students will effectively and efficiently
select, retrieve, organize, maintain and evaluate information.
Students will complete the following tasks
with confidence:
- Identify and formulate a research question which
describes their information need
- Create lists of keywords to use to locate their
information
- Decide when it is appropriate to use print vs.
nonprint sources
- Identify and locate possible sources (both print
and nonprint) of information
- Use the online library catalog to find a book by
author, title, and keyword
- Use the tables of contents and indexes of books
to find information relative to their topics
- Understand when and how to use reference
materials such as encyclopedias, atlases, almanacs, etc.
- Choose online services, such as EBSCOhost, SIRS,
and online encyclopedias, to retrieve articles relevant to information
needs
- Use search strategies such as Boolean Logic to
narrow down results and retrieve relevant information via Web search
engines and directories and online services
- Evaluate Web sites to determine relevancy,
accuracy, and authority
- Cite sources (both print and non-print) in
bibliographies
