Dear
Parents,
Thanks to all of you who made it to conferences last week. I hope you
felt informed about your child’s progress.
Here is what’s in store for this week in second grade. We will not be
reading a new story in the reading book or having a new spelling list. With the
Halloween activities this week we have a shortened schedule. We will be
reading Halloween books and doing some fun activities that go along with
them. Beginning this week, our class will have parent volunteer literacy helpers
with us Tuesday through Friday mornings for 50 minutes. During this time your
child will get to listen to an adult read, read with an adult partner, or get
help with independent writing activities. I am looking forward to their help, as
it will enable me to have more time to work with children one on one, or in
small groups. This week we will be practicing and reviewing previous spelling
words, plural nouns, and antonyms. The children will also be practicing
writing paragraphs this week with good openings and details. In math
we will continue unit 3. The students will be graphing, frames and arrows with
two rules, and making change. Please refer to the unit parent packet sent home
last week for further explanation of each of these. In social studies we
will continue learning about our nation’s government. We have been reading some
books about Washington D.C. and some important monuments. There will be a social
studies test on Friday covering unit 1. I will be sending home the social
studies book and a study guide on Thursday. Our school Halloween party and
parade will be Friday at 2:00. The children will be allowed to change into
their costumes at 1:45. The parade will begin at 2:00. Please make sure your
child does NOT wear their costume to school. Due to the large number of students
here at Northpoint, there is no guarantee that your child will be able to change
clothes in the bathroom. It would be helpful if they have something that can be
slipped on over their clothes in the classroom. Remember no weapons, blood or
gore of any kind is allowed at school. Thanks for your help with this. The
weekly homework is attached and due next Monday. Have a great week!

Dear
Parents,
Here is what’s happening this week
in 2L. We will
read a new story in our reading books
titled Henry and Mudge Under the Yellow
Moon. The theme is friendship
and I will be reading aloud other books relating to this theme. The
spelling and
phonics skill for the week are words
ending with ed. The children took a
spelling pre-test today. Due to the short week, I will not test them until next
Monday rather than Friday. This will give everyone an extra few days to practice
these words. We will talk about command and exclamation sentences this week as
well as review questions and statements.
We will be talking about story elements beginning with the setting of a
story. We are continuing to practice
reading books quietly and how to read to a partner. Be sure to ask your child
about the “read to self” and “read to someone” rules. We will continue to talk
about the STUCK bookmark you received on curriculum night. By the end of the
week your child should be able to tell you about the
skip it,
try again, and use
another word strategy.
In science we will continue learning about animal classifications.
This week we will talk about birds and insects. The children are making
some really fun flip books about this that they will be able to share with you!
In
math we will be working with equivalent names for numbers, counting
patterns, and less than/ greater than symbols.
We will be exploring the use of a calculator as well. The first home link
will come home toward the end of the week. These are always due the following
day.
The new homework and reading log is attached.
Have a great week!

Dear
Parents,
Here is
what’s planned for this week in second grade.
We will be reading a new story in the
reading book titled
Get Up and Go.
The phonics skill will be
words with the ake and ame spelling
pattern. You will see this pattern
in this week’s spelling list as well.
The list will come home today.
We will be working on statement and question sentences, and sequencing
this week as well. We will also
begin to work on the reading strategies listed on your bookmark you received at
Curriculum Night. The children will
be getting the same bookmark to keep here at school to refer to as we practice
using each strategy. We have been
very busy practicing how to read quietly to ourselves using good fit books. The
children have also practiced what it means to read the pictures in a book. Be
sure to ask them about this.
In
science we have been learning the
steps of the scientific method to do some fun experiments.
This week we will continue to learn more facts about frogs including the
life cycle. Toward the end of the week we will begin our first science unit in
the textbook on animal classification. In
math we will continue with unit one.
We will be looking at place value, using number grids, and practice
addition facts to ten. There will
not be any math home links again this week.
This
week’s homework assignment sheet and
new reading log is attached. They
are both due next Monday September 7.
Remember that you only need to return the attached sheet with your
initials to indicate which choices were completed.
Hurray! My
website is up and running and up to date.
On it you will find our classroom schedule, a monthly calendar, and each
weekly note. Eventually there will
be some photos of the students as well.
Be sure to check it out! Have
a great week!

Dear
Parents,
This is the first of weekly letters to keep you informed about what is
happening in our classroom. This
week we will begin our first reading
story from our basal reader titled The
Mixed-Up Chameleon. This story’s theme is being yourself.
We will be reading other books that have this same message this week.
The students will also begin choosing “just right books” for their
individual book bags. Be sure to ask them about these. By the end of the week
everyone will have a bag full of good fitting books! The
spelling words have the phonograms
“id” and “ide” and we will be working on building words with these sounds. We
will also be working with five high frequency words. The children took a
pre-test today and there will be a post test on Friday.
Be sure to check your child’s take home
folder today for their list. The
comprehension skill is the main idea
and details of a story. We will be
working on writing complete sentences
as well.
In math we will begin our first math unit.
During the next two weeks we will be briefly reviewing counting money,
telling time, reading a calendar, and addition facts.
We will be working with number lines as well.
There will not be any math homework this week.
Be sure to check your child’s take home folder for a parent letter
informing you about the math program and what the first unit will cover.
In
science we will be learning some fun
and interesting facts about frogs.
We will also begin to do some experiments using the steps of the scientific
method.
The
first weekly homework choices are
attached. Please choose at least
three activities and complete only one per day. Parents please initial by
each choice. You do not need to send
anything back to school except the homework choice sheet to let me know what was
completed. Remember to read
for 15 minutes a night and fill out the reading log.
Both are due next Monday, August 31.
Be sure to attend Curriculum Night
tonight beginning in the gym at 6:00 for teacher introductions and a brief PTO
presentation. There will be two classroom presentations one from 6:30-7 and one
from 7-7:30. I will be giving the
same information at both sessions so you may attend whichever one is convenient
for you. Remember this is a parent
only night so that I may have your full attention!!
Have a great week!
