Principal’s Report/Dr. Mehall
-One Book
(reading a whole novel at school) was fun!
Some teams are continuing on their own to read a common novel. Everyone completed the reading of Drums,
Girls, and Dangerous Pie before Thanksgiving.
-Family
Reading Night was very successful with 380 people picking up sack lunches. Providing dinner was very important. We had storytellers, the book fair, IWU
readers, Prairie Thunder readers, Dr. Niehaus, Mr. Pye, Mr. Eder, two bands (only guitar players were
available to come), the door decoration contest, kids room with face painting
in Arends Gym, a rap presentation word games, student
presentations of “This I Believe” in Mrs. Warner’s room, and Family Read
Posters. We will definitely do this
again. We have had many positive
comments about the event. Committee
included:
Kim Brandon, Cally
Hutson, Kari Hennefent, Carolyn
Thompson and Trisha Warner. Many teachers and
several parent volunteers including Lori Wisniewski
who helped get volunteers.
-Our
students read 205,000 pages in the Lollapalooza program this year. Assemblies were held and readers had the
opportunity to have their names drawn to win prizes by participating in the
money crawl, book walk, tricycle races, and dunk tank. I was dunked 4 times (participating in all
three assemblies). It was a great way to
end our reading program.
-Our 8th
grade girls won their regional against Prairie Central (by only 2 points) on
Thursday.
-Student
Council is working hard this year. They
will be selling candygrams in the near future. They will also collect gifts for the
Brotherhood Tree, and they are planning to sponsor a 7th and 8th
grade Activity Night during second semester.
-A 7th
and 8th grade Activity Night will be held December 7 from
- Tish Hamblen will be the parent representative to train on
participating in a time study. This
study would have someone shadow Dr. Mehall for 5 days
to record everything that I do. This
person would not talk to anyone during this week, and he/she would stay all the
time I am at school. At the end the data
will be examined to see how I spend my day:
management versus instructional leadership. The goal is to lead more into instructional
leadership. Someone else, probably the associate principal as well as the
administrative assistant, would take over many of the management
responsibilities. This training is to
see if KJHS is ready to participate in this study.
