Presentation by special guest Dr. Gary Niehaus, Unit 5 Superintendent

Referendum issues presented:

$80-$100 million referendum in February ‘08

New middle school, elementary and expansion of Sugar Creek Elementary

By 2015, we should add another high school

Grove Elementary is the model for new grade schools—

Would like to renovate eight existing “inner circle” schools with better

lights, ceilings, new doors etc.

All but Carlock and Brigham are using geothermal units.

Fairview, Hudson, Oakdale and Glenn have added air conditioning.

Almost 1,000 kids in kindergarten and first grade in the district

Dr. Niehaus emphasized that by 2010-2012, we will have to seriously consider

moving some kids into the older “inner circle” schools to best utilize all of the district’s resources.  Some redistricting will need to occur.

Safety issues:

Dr. Niehaus and staff are investigating the possibility of all buses having GPS systems and an “I Pass” for every student when they get on and off the bus each day.  He also emphasized the need for more work with the town of Normal on safe walking routes for children.  Officers currently patrol popular walking routes.

Several schools, including Kingsley need more cameras

Portable classroom safety was also discussed regarding children passing

from trailers to main buildings.
