Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Book Award

The Award

 

The Rebecca Caudill Young Readers' Book Award is an annual award given to the author of the book voted most outstanding by students in grades four through eight in participating Illinois schools.  The award is named in honor of Rebecca Caudill who lived and wrote in Urbana, Illinois, for nearly 50 years.  The award is given in recognition for her literary talent and the universal appeal of her books which have touched the hearts of many children and young adults.

 

How the Program will work at Kingsley Jr. High

 

  1. All Caudill books are available for checkout in the IMC.
  2. Langauge Arts' teachers have records for keeping track of "official" reading.
  3. Students may keep track with brochures from the IMC.
  4. Students need to reach their goals by mid February.
  5. Students need to read at least 3 Caudill books to officially qualify to vote and for a prize drawing.
  6. Students who read over ½ the Caudill books will be invited to a Caudill Party sponsored by the IMC.
  7. Students who read all books will be given books or gift cards to local bookstores.

Books nominated must meet the criteria listed below.

 

1.     Nominator must have read the book.

2.     Book must have literary merit.

3.     Book must be of interest and appeal to children in grades 4-8.

4.     Book must be copyrighted within the last 5 years.

5.     Book must be in print at the time of selection.

6.     Book may be nonfiction, poetry, or fiction.

7.     Book may not be a textbook, an anthology, a translation, part of a series or formula fiction.

8.     Author must be living at the time of nomination and at the time of selection of the Master List.
