Managing homework is a big part of the middle school. It not only teaches your child some time management skills, but also reinforces independence and practice of concepts taught in school. You can expect your child to have some homework each night. (However, we try not to give homework on Fridays.) Please ask to see your child's assignment notebook on a daily basis. The teachers on our team take time at the end of each day to have students write down the assignments. Assignments are also posted on our individual web sites for your convenience. Please note that at times there may be problems with the computer system and the site may not be up-to-date. If your child continues to come home without any homework, you may want to contact his/her homeroom teacher to assess the situation. It is typical for 6th graders to spend between an hour to an hour and a half on homework each night. If your child is consistently spending more time doing homework, please contact your child's teacher (s) to determine if your child is using class time efficiently.
Our team policy is that homework is due the next day unless indicated on the assignment book. We give each student four homework coupons to use per quarter. A homework coupon will allow the student to turn in the assignment one day late with no consequence to their grade. Once the four homework coupons are used up for the quarter, no late work will be accepted and the student will receive a zero on the assignment. At the end of each quarter if a student has any homework coupons left over they turn them in for Cav Cash, (see section labeled Cav Cash).
Also, in order for homework to be graded, a student must write his/her name on the assignment. No name papers will not be graded. It is difficult for a teacher to guess who turned in a paper with no name when there are approximately 75-80 students on our team.
Classroom Behavior/Expectations
Positive classroom behavior is expected for a positive learning environment. Behaviors such as being tardy to class, not being prepared, being disrespectful, chewing gum, disrupting class, as well as other inappropriate behaviors are not acceptable and will have some consequences. Consequences include phone calls home, conferences with parents/teachers/students, and after school detentions.
We want to emphasize positive behavior in our classrooms. Students are rewarded each month if they haven't served a detention.
Each student is given a hallway/bathroom pass to keep track of per quarter. We use hallway/bathroom passes to help monitor student movement throughout the building. Having these passes also helps limit the amount of time away from instruction. Although students may use the restroom in between classes, we realize that there are other times that it may be necessary to use the restroom during a class period.
It is the students' responsibility to check with each teacher about make up work when they return from an absence. If a student has missed a test or a quiz, the student is expected to approach the teacher to schedule a time to make up the missed test or quiz. If the test or quiz was announced before a student's absence, the student will be required to take the test when he/she returns. If a student is absent for two days or more, parents may call the school office to request make up work. Make-up work requested prior to 10:00 a.m. will be compiled and placed in the office to be picked up at the end of the school day. If you have further questions regarding make up work, please refer to the Kingsley handbook or contact a team teacher.
Cav Cash is a part of our positive behavior intervention system used at Kingsley. Cav Cash is paper "cash" that can be earned by exhibiting positive behavior choices throughout the building and in classrooms. Cav Cash can be spent in the cafeteria on Friday's for various items like school supplies and popcorn. Also, a student can bank his/her Cav Cash and use it for bigger rewards that are offered at the end of each semester. In the past, if a student has saved between 75-100 Cav Cash dollars, he/she could sign up to participate in various activities outside the building.
