Extreme Makeover at Hoose Begins
02|24|09   —  March News from the Principal

Geothermal Heating and Cooling System – Drilling has begun for a geothermal heating and cooling system.   Colene Hoose will be converted to this affordable and sustainable solution that reduces costs and lessens our dependence on fossil fuels.   All the geothermal wells will be drilled on the west side of the school between the reading garden and Grandview Avenue.  This area is currently temporarily secured with fencing.  After the wells are drilled and the piping is connected to the building, the grass will be replanted and our school community will have full access to that green space.  Unit Five has made this conversion at other schools in our district.  Now it is time for Hoose.

Portable Classrooms – The District has committed four portable classrooms to Colene Hoose for next year.   This will be for one school year.   After redistricting and the planned opening of two new Unit Five Elementary Schools (Benjamin Elementary and Cedar Ridge Elementary) and the addition to Sugar Creek, Hoose will no longer need the additional four portable classrooms.

Next year Hoose will have five sections of first and second grades as well as increasing fifth grade from three sections to four.  Also included in next year’s plan is to move art off the stage into a classroom.

At this point Mrs. Musson and I have not assigned classes for next year.   Mrs. Musson and I will work with the staff to gather input regarding use of the portable classrooms for next year.

Renovations –  All classrooms, the IMC and the Lab are scheduled to be renovated in the summer of 2010.
