All students, beginning with the kindergarten classes, have music classes two or three times each week. The periods are 25 minutes in length and include singing, music theory, listening experiences, movement, and playing classroom instruments. In addition, each child takes part in a concert performance during the year. The Colene Hoose elementary general music teacher is Mrs. Jan Scott. In fifth grade, all students are given the opportunity to take part in the band or strings program. The instrumental music program is taught by a large group of Unit 5 instrumental teachers who come to the building twice each week for lessons. In April, the instrumental students perform an evening concert for their parents and friends. Following their Hoose music experience, all students may continue music in junior high by joining the chorus, band, or orchestra. Unit 5 has gained national acclaim for their outstanding music program.
